For those with the 400E and E420 here FCP is blowing out the unique to these car's front struts for under $80!!

I used them on my 400E few years ago after the NOS 500E struts blew after 1kkm. They are a bit firmer compared to the 500E front struts. Keep in mind that the top hole in this sachs 115-070 struts is for M12 bolt and I need to drill mine for M14 bolts that my car have.

@gsxr, is Kidre’s butt dyno right in his statement that these shocks are firmer than the 500 E shocks? I guess they would be missing the internal spring thing that was unique to the 036. I’m asking because I have these E60 replica springs and for my liking the regular 036 shocks have to much rebound when combined with the E60 springs

I haven't used these specific struts, but they appear similar to the Bilstein "HD" (now branded as B6, or something like that).

The internal springs on the 036 struts are tuned to a specific ride height - need to keep everything near factory specs for those to work correctly. (This means those H&R springs are less than ideal with stock 036 dampers.)

If you want firmer than stock, the Bilstein Sports (now B8) or KONI yellows are the next firmer option. If you want adjustable compression and/or rebound, you have to get full custom stuff ($$$$). Pity we can't get Öhlins to whip up some 036 dampers for us.

BTW, the FCP price might have been an error... now up to $89 each. Good deal, not fantastic.

That's confusing if these are the same struts that I used on my 420 as mine are surprisingly smooth riding yet still have a solid cornering response. . The Bilstine B4's I used on the wagon are much harsher. I may need to check the part number of the set i put on the 420 as we had to make some calls to get the right strut that would bolt up without mods on my car. It really is impressive in how it rides and handles with this set up.

I feel like the recommendation these days is just go for the Bilstein B8. I have Koni Yellows on my car from yesteryear, and the B8 recommendation has been near unanimous.

maw

i believe this still be true:

B6 (HD) vs. B8 (Sport) Bilsteins…Same exact internal valving, difference is length of the shaft.
B8’s are for cars lowered more than ~1”.
