Front spoiler/grille mods?

I want to remove and repaint my front bumper/spoiler this winter and, while I'm at it, wonder about adding a protective wire mesh insert to keep stones and debris from damaging the euro oil-cooler. Has anyone done similar work?

the Oil cooler doesn't really get damaged (at least not that easy). Never heard/seen one that was.

Unfortunately, a rock took out a fog lamp on this year's vacation drive, but the worst the oil cooler got was thoroughly clogged with bug guts. Not my favorite thing to clean up every night :-0 I slipped a piece of fiberglas window screening behind the radiator shell and it has worked wonderfully for several years at keeping the bugs out...

Dean, I bet you could have a sheet metal shop bend and put tabs to clip it on and off so that you can pull it off and wash it of bugs. Also, somewhat unrelated, I posted it on 500Ex a long time ago, but there is a place that makes those lip spoiler/protectors, that may be cool for you too. Glad you had fun at the SS classic, let me know next time maybe I'll head over.

Dean,

If this is a big problem, you can move the oil cooler into right fender, in front of the inner plastic fender. It's done on my SuperMerc and the oil cooler is quite clean, even with the lower part of the inner plastic fender cut off.

Arnt, did you adapt the diesel cooler? Nice work...perhaps a brief technical article would be of value if you have the time. Anyway, I have an .036 Euro-spec oil cooler installed (courtesy of Austin) that I am happy with :-)

Hi Dean

Sorry for my slow response. I don't know which type oil cooler it is, it was on the car when I bought it. The reason for having it there is that the intercooler takes the origin place for the Euro oil cooler behind the bumper. Please don't look at the finish, the car is kept as it was when I imported it back in 2007. On the enclosed photo you get a glimpse of the mesh behind the bumper.

Cheers

Thanks for the picture Arnt. There was a lot of custom detail work done to your car! No problems overheating then, with all those vents?

No, I've not had any overheating. The additional watercooler on the left side may help, however I don't think it's necessary here in Norway, so I'll take it out. The vents under the headlights is not openings only, but it's built in ducts leading the air into the engine bay.

The holes in the front spoiler leads to the tiny intercooler. This Air/Air intercooler is far too small for this engine volume, so it might not be of any noticable help. I'm planning to get an Air/Water intercooler with electrical pump controlled by the boost. The A/W intercooler will replace the additional watercooler in the left fender (as mentioned above). The needed cooler register for the A/W intercooler will then replace the existing Air/Air intercooler.

You do probably have overheating problems up in Edmonton? In accordance to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton you have quite hot summers. I think the overheating problem with 124036 among others is due to a sealed off engine bay, preventing all ventilation.

Cheers

Thanks for the pictures! My only overheating experiences have been during high-speed rallying; I had to throttle back one year and drop out of contention when the needle went into the red :-( My own fault for not preparing properly. Now, heat is a concern for turbocharging I'm sure. The STS remote-mount turbo looks very appealing and I will be checking into it...

Front spoiler/grille mods Chin Spoiler

A long time ago, probably on 500ecstasy I reported regarding the chin spoiler I purchased from
Göckel Automobilveredelung
Neufraerstr. 2
72501 Gammertingen
Tel. 07574 / 93 33 12
Fax. 07574 / 93 33 15
tuning@goeckel.de
www.goeckel.de

A large box arrived in the Czech Republic but without the TUV certifcate and the fixing screws and glue that I had been promised and presumably paid for.
The spoiler fits over the existing spoiler and NOT below as I had thought.
I tried to clarify the details regarding how the spolier fitted with Erik Göckel but language difference was a problem. Anyway I got it wrong. Erik refused to refund my money even though I returned the spoiler and he did not deliver the extras.

3 years plus went by with occasional e-mails to Erik so he would not forget me.

With the help of a German speaker I recently had Goeckel send the spoiler, certificate and fixings to England.

That is the end of the story. So the moral is really check what you are buying and use a good translation facility to avoid misunderstandings.

Göckel is known for bad quality. He has no seriuos buyers in Germany.

Ah! good to know....to be honest the spoiler looks ok..but I have yet to fit it. The service quality is poor as you can see from my post.

Several years ago I also contacted Gockel and they replied in English...offered me a franchise for NA! Glad I didn't take it :-0
