*** UPDATE *** This car sold in June 2013.

No affiliation, etc. Car is actually in Frisco, TX which is a bit north of Dallas. Sounds like yet another person who doesn't know the dash switch is NOT supposed to raise the rear headrests. Strange about the power antenna though, how is this operated "manually"...?
UPDATE: AutoCheck report attached, accident reported in 2009. Power antenna is broken but the mast can be pulled up/down by hand.

BaT Exclusive: 1994 Mercedes Benz E500

This 1994 Mercedes Benz E500 (Chassis WDBEA36E1RC045966) is offered by the owner since December of 2008. The car was not up to his cosmetic expectations at that point, so in March 2009 he had it re-sprayed in original 040 black and also had the wheels refinished. He then had 3M clear bra applied to the hood, fenders, and mirrors. Maintenance is paramount with these flared beasts, and he says that all scheduled maintenance has been performed, and that the car needs needs absolutely nothing to be enjoyed immediately. The seller has bought several BaT cars, and with the recent purchase of an early 911, this E500 needs to go to make room. It is available in Frisco, Texas for $15,900.

Black/black is a great color scheme on this car, as many others came with metallic paint colors, contrasting lower cladding, and 2-tone interiors which have not aged as well. This car was $84,000 when new, and 1994 was the final year with smoother headlights and lower body cladding. The seller says that his Mercedes starts without fail, drives straight and true regardless of speed, and pulls like a freight train to the redline with no issues. He says the transmission shifts smoothly and precisely, and that the car will not overheat, even in 108 degree Texas heat.

The A/C is described as “ice cold”and the heat and defrost as “sweltering.” The leather upholstery looks to be in excellent shape and the front seats are heated. The seller says that everything in the car works properly apart from the rear headrest up-down adjustment, the rear cabin light, and the power antenna, which must be operated manually.

The car now has 139,569 miles. Below is a list of the other maintenance and repairs performed under the seller’s ownership:

7/18/2009
■Drive belt, tensioner, and pulley replaced
■Coolant reservoir replaced and system flushed
■Brake system flushed and bled
■Changed oil, filter, air filters, power steering filter, and fuel filter
■New spark plugs
■Three new tie rods

8/13/2009
■4-wheel alignment

3/04/2010
■Replaced blower motor and regulator
■Replaced cabin filter
■Replaced wiper blades
■Replaced drivers key micro switch (locks now operate properly from drivers door and trunk)

11/30/2010
■4 Yokohama YK520 Tires installed at 134,021 miles

9/05/2012
■Replaced electric cooling fans
■Replaced thremostat
■4-wheel alignment and tires road-force balance

I do love the 040! Great color combo for that car for sure. I am guessing this car would be due for some serious mechanical work soon given the miles and lack of things done on the lists above. Also, it could be the angle, but it seems like the trunk badge is off. Possible rear end damage or respray?

Looks pretty clean though.

Car was repainted, so the trunk badge was probably not re-installed in the factory location (very common, as you have probably discovered already). My guess is that the list above is only the recent maintenance performed, someone would need to contact the seller to inquire about previous records. I think that the year and color combo (plus the painted lowers) makes it rare enough to justify the asking price, again assuming a PPI doesn't turn up anything major.

:detective:

Ugh - the BAT trolls have surfaced in the comments at the original link. Amazing how many uninformed people are out there.

:wormhole:

Frisco/plano/dallas- all runs together.

There are some really good mechanics you can get a PPI from- I would think. I know a few shops our local MBCA club uses in the area.

Flickr album is working now. Car looks pretty decent, but it's a bummer about the replacement steering wheel & standard airbag. Also looks like the driver's seat side bolster leather may have been replaced, as it doesn't look the same to my untrained eye. Door pockets peeling (common), another bummer with the aftermarket cupholders screwed through the door leather (also common). Still looks like a decent car overall.

:apl:

I agree w/ cupholders screwed through the door panels are a real bummer. How difficult is it to find replacement panels? Or, can the leather insert in the door panel be replaced? Is it expensive to address this issue?

Black would be pretty ez to repair

New leather should still be available from MB, or you can get used panels from any other 1990-up W124 with black leather (eBay, eHendy, etc). I just left the cupholders on my cars, they work decently well for most drinks except the 1538-ounce super-king-size barrels-o-soda from the local burger joints. ;)

Also - doesn't the rear end look like it sits too high? Perhaps SLS issues?
It may be a tad high, or could have an empty tank of fuel. Tweaking the SLS turnbuckle should help, along with a thinner rear spring pad. You can also get a different factory rear spring which will drop the rear end 1/4 to 1/2 inch, if you want a bit lower without cutting the original springs or using aftermarket springs. I'd fiddle with the SLS and pads first.

However, based on the BaT comments, the car is really only worth $5k, and will need about $25k in repairs right after you buy it. *snicker*

:seesaw:

It sold on Ebay but the deal must of fallen through - the current owner is the same owner who had it listed on Ebay in 2011.

AutoCheck report now attached in original post. Contents pasted below. "Severe accident" in Jan 2009...? WTH? Guess that explains why it got repainted in March 2009?

Explanation of the accident by the owner:

car rolled down the approach to my hanger and hit my work bench..impact was probably 5 mph.. HOOD AND HEADLIGHTS AND GRILL REPLACED..THAT'S IT. Don't think CARFAX even reported.. No structural damage. All factory decals untouched inside engine compartment. ONCE AGAIN, anyone serious can do a PPI. If doesn't pass I'll refund the money spent. Nice touch with the "MAJOR" damage you decided to add. Children, please go play with your toys and leave this to the adults. AUTOCHECK SCORE IS STILL 56, STILL WAY ABOVE THE NORM FOR THIS EXAMPLE.

car still qualifies for buyback protections through AUTOCHECK

Note that his AutoCheck report & score of 56 is from Nov-2009. The current AutoCheck from Nov-2012 has a score of 36.

Sounds like the seller is one of those "legend in his own mind" types....way too humble to address legitimate inquiry...my radar says stay away....

OUCH! What a bummer... I wonder why Texas DMV reported this as "SEVERE DAMAGE"...?

FWIW, I know the leather center section (where the cup holders are) can be replaced without too much difficulty or effort. Find a used set from a 400E or E420 and remove them according to the instructions on Dave's site. Looking at the back it will become clear as to how they are attached.

thanks for (mostly) positive comments fellas....just got tired of the beat down from the peanut gallery on a $15k example...I do not have a budget on anything I own..wouldn't do any good anyway :). The only reason I haven't sorted the antenna motor is just spent a good sum to have the mast replaced..motor was working fine at the time and they are not free....motor went out about a week or two after replacing mast and just didn't want to be without the car again and frankly was a little pissed. These are not for the faint of heart or wallet. I did replace the upper bolster at a cost of $473. The Tin Lizzy affair here local does all my work and are fantastic..the whole seat was $1400 or so and the rest is in good shape...my feeling-right or wrong- is as fast as that bolster area wore in relation to the rest of seat tells me the patina will begin soon and will blend in better with time..as far as "a legend in my own mind" comment...don't get it...I spent more on the engine-out service on my Boxer a couple years ago than I'm asking for my E. I'm not a chump-change and don't have a problem maintaining my collection...the E included...and yes I do know the switch isn't to raise the rear headrests...the tint fellas were complaining when I had the 3M bra and tint done..it's a bit tight getting to rear glass..regarding autocheck...when I bought the car score was 72...in Nov 2009 the score was 56 and on page 5 it said accident front-center but nowhere did it say major...I assume the miles have decreased the score...ok got that out of my system---I know how good an example this is and I know all needs have been addressed--even offered to refund anyone's PPI money if she didn't pass...just easier to keep--what else can I buy for $15k (or whatever she's worth)...oh and by the way, since I do drive her quite a bit and like coffee in the morning--yes I did add the cupholders..my apologies to the German philosophy :)

BaT listing (old) - '94 E500 in black/black. Frisco TX

This is an old BaT listing - Oct. 2012 - and I apologize if this is deemed inappropriate for this forum, but I'm very curious if anyone knows what happened to this car. This car was just up the Dallas tollway from me a few miles and it's exactly the car/combo I'm looking for. I'm just curious if anyone knows what happened to this car, since cars are so well logged here. Any insight would be appreciated.

Some guy using the curious handle of "gsxr" made a lot of thoughtful comments on that BaT listing! Somehow that idiot Klink missed it, and did not make any comments. If a Benz catches his eye on BaT, he just goes on and on...

LOL... I had forgotten about most of those comments. Thankfully, I didn't write anything too embarrassing, and it's mostly still accurate (except the price ranges, 034 has gone down, 036 has gone up).

I hope you're not putting down our .034 guests, now..... their MAFs, valve bodies, oiler tubes and exhaust brackets are a VERY valuable source of parts for us .036ers....

I currently have two 034's so nope, I'm not putting them down at all. Fantastic daily drivers, IMO. Only problem is the supply of nice ones is drying up. There was a nice Emerald Green one that just popped up for sale in the Bay area at $4k from a dealer, could probably be picked up for around $3k... had ASR and heated seats, too. Only down side was a fungal interior.

That's very true, every one I found on the SE coast of Florida was a beat,
high miles, (over 200K) and needed paint and interior work.

I had to fly over to west coast to Tampa then St Petersburg to find this one.
Only had 113K and paint and interior as good as I've seen since they were new.

Yes, I do believe we've given ol' 400Eric a few good solid suplexes. Thanks, pardner!! :jono:
