WANTED Fuel Sending Unit

Just confirming, you want the yellow-top, 036-specific sending unit, correct? (I don't have one, but wanted to clarify your post!)

:rugby:

I know. No it would not go back together. My service guy is reaching out to someone he knows in the motherland. We will see.

Photos would help. The unit is fairly simple. Have you personally seen it, or are you just taking the word of the service guy that it isn't fixable?

:scratchchin:

Taking the word. I trust him as well. Served me right for a lot of years. He had to drain the tank and fish out pieces.

Got it. You could ask for the old pieces. Keep in mind that shops have to deal with warranty issues, and are generally reluctant to perform patch jobs like attempting to repair a sending unit that fell apart. They want a replacement unit (ideally new) with less probability of an unpleasant phone call weeks later. OTOH, 036 enthusiasts may want to try and salvage the NLA unobtanium. Shoot, another forum member may want to buy the pieces if it looks like it could be fixable.

Worst case, you could install a standard sending unit, and swap in a standard fuel gauge in the cluster (or, recalibrate your existing gauge, there's an adjustment pot as Jlaa documented). The only drawback to the standard sending unit is that your reserve light will trigger with only ~2.5 gallons remaining, instead of the normal ~3.5 gallons. Otherwise, with the proper gauge (or recalibrated 036 gauge), the readings will be accurate with the standard sending unit - other than the reserve amount.

+1 to what Dave said. Most professionals don't have the time, and often lack the skills, to custom restore/fabricate parts. There are folks here that may be able to do so.

Looks like the standard sending unit A1245420004 may be NLA, but you'd have to contact a dealer to check worldwide inventory in Paragon. $155 MSRP, ~$120 discount. RevParts dealers don't say "Discontinued" yet, but that doesn't mean they can get one...

:apl:

appreciate the feed back. Think recalibration is on tap for now and keeping eye out for the correct unit. sad they do this.
