Don't assume the sending unit is faulty. You need to test the output at the connector, on top of the fuel tank, easy to access through the trunk. If the signal is incorrect, next step is removing the sender to clean it. If the signal IS correct, next check what signal is present at the wires behind the cluster. Could be either wiring, or the gauge itself.
Yes, the sending unit is 036-specific, NLA, and nearly impossible to find. Your old one can very likely be cleaned/repaired.
I have a fluctuating / flickering fuel gauge in my car when I got to 3/4 tank and below.

If was able to fix this problem by removing and cleaning the fuel tank sender.
Sender part number: 124-542-03-04 (did NOT need to buy, only remove and clean, its over $100 now - UPDATE - The sender is now NLA)
Parts Required for this HOW-TO (the o-rings for the sender large holder nut)
