Gauge cluster LED bulbs

Hi. I ordered two replacement bulbs for the #2721 bulbs. Every cross-reference I checked said the LED #74 /T5 wedge replaced the 2721. My mechanic said they don't fit. Any ideas? (I guess as an initial matter, is it not a good idea (mechanically) to use LEDs for the gauges)?
