Why is it that even with all these updates, it still takes some time to actually start? I don't think I've ever heard a M119 start immediately, they always seem to require some revolutions...

My 500E starts almost immediately most times (as you turn the key it's on), does start as per above videos sometimes.

Glen - I don't think you're starter was at fault as your car starts fine even in the first video (generally characteristic of M119 to start like that).

Well all fuel injected cars go 2-3 turns to set everything right.. ECU reads off crankshaft position etc then starts. Uneven start ups (sometimes super quick, often not) are a thing of carbed cars.. I wouldn't say this M119 video is any different of any fuel injected cars.

The starting time/sound in both of Glen's videos sounds normal/typical for an M119 [to me].

In the year or two before my starter died (which was a very sudden death) the starting took almost double the time, and it was sort of in "slow motion." Very similar to having a weak battery. The starter itself was weak. Replacing the starter gave the starting "authority" (strength) and brought it back up to the normal time/sound that both of Glen's videos indicate.

Exactly.

The explanation I was looking for. Thanks!

Crank time seems pretty normal to me, my silver car is the same. The starter motor itself I think was fine, it was the solenoid that was intermittent. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a video of the problem but what would happen is the starter would spin up but not engage the flywheel. This used to happen once or twice per week and then it stopped altogether after the car came back from paint. For the last six plus months it behaved 100% perfect...until I pointed it out in Doug's starter how-to. As I'm gearing up for a week long road trip, I didn't want to have the starter fail suddenly while away from home.

+1. All my M119's have pretty much the identical startup/fire time as seen in Glen's videos.

:pc1:

The wife and I took off on a week long road trip. Heading up to Lake Tahoe for a couple days and then meandering back home hitting various sites. Anyway, about 10 minutes outside of Palmdale on SR14, we hit the next 1000 mile marker.

Currently taking a quick breather here:

Hit a little rain on the way to Mammoth where we spent the night.

On our way to Lake Tahoe Tuesday morning, this was in Toiyabe National Forest at about 8000 feet.

Shortly after this, it started raining pretty hard but the car has been running great, except for the noisy diff which is getting a bit louder so this will be one of the first things I replace when I get home.

Thanks Gerry, but I didn't know we'd be stopping there either. This is an ad hoc vacation, no firm plans for anything. It's all an adventure [emoji3]

A few pix around the lake...

Nice photos, thanks. But no evidence of a drought...:detective:

Actually, in the Kiva beach picture, you can see the lake is quite a bit below normal. I'd say at least 5 or 6 feet, possibly more. Normally the water line is above where the flowers are.

While you're up north, you should head up to Chico and visit the Sierra Nevada brewery, and perhaps Lake Shasta :)

So, some bad news. Yesterday afternoon Lake Tahoe experienced a freak hail storm. According to the news, it was golf ball sized!

Sigh, you can guess the outcome. I'd say there are at least a few dozen dimples freckled over the hood, roof, and trunk lid. [emoji29]

I'll be seeking a PDR miracle worker when I get home.

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Oy!! Sorry to hear about that, Glen. Looking at your pics makes me think about putting my 8-holes back on...

What does it take to get the dimples out? Is that something your handy (mobile) door ding folks can take care of? Please tell me it's that simple.

maw

Damn,! Ouch that sucks. Good luck with the fix & don't let it dampen the rest of the trip !

Sorry to hear about it Glen, I was enjoying reading about your adventure trip until you mentioned the hail storm. Hope the best for the rest of your trip, and if needed, I know a skilled PDR shop in Huntington Beach that I am sure will be able to fix your dents!

Thanks guys! I'll post some pix after I get home and clean up the car.

I had some dents removed from my car and the guy who did it has been removing dents for the better part of 13 years. He said the steel our cars use is the best (if not one of the best) metals to remove dents from. He contrasted it with the Tesla which uses aluminum and because of the porousness of the aluminum, you crush the metal it order to remove a dent while the steel these cars use is not porous and dents are removed nicely.

Hope this gives you a little piece of mind. My dents you cannot even see under the light with a reflection.

Robert

We can find a local PDR guy. I've used more than one. Dent Doctor. Best to find the absolute best referral. I've had some dents removed with shocking results. The right person will get 'er done. enjoy your trip, try not to think about it.

Absolutely PDR works wonderful on benz's.

MB really started the techonology on the factory line as a repair- so their would be no paint rework. MB's (I'm told) there is 100% access to do PDR. Key is getting someone good. I did body work and I can easily see pdr which is not perfect. In fact, on one VW I took it back and they re-did the complete car a second time after the hail season was over.
Came out perfect.

Yup, Japanese cars will dent from nothing.. W124s are tanks, way different than the mind steel W203s and 210s are built from.

Hail damage sucks but that's how it is when you use a car.. Some battle scars here and there is a given - pristine cars don't see the world and where's the fun in that.. ;)

Almost home. Missed the exact 000, snapped this near Santa Barbara.

That's some amazingly good mileage, particularly for an engine with that mileage on it. Congrats !!

It's really hard to get pictures of the hail divots but here are a few snapshots:

No, not yet. Was a down-time day today...other than washing the car [emoji3]

Not much happening at the moment. I'm still looking for a PDR guy to repair the hail damage. I've pulled the headliner to give whoever I end up using easy access to the roof and also so I can recover it. Other than that I continue to commute with it and today crossed the next 1000 mile marker.

Picked up a stock 2.82 differential from captruff today, will be installing next weekend. I actually pulled my diff yesterday with the intention of installing a 2.65 from a '94 SL500. The SL unit has what is referred to as a reinforced housing...GSXR, if you are reading this, I can now confirm (what you have been wondering) that it will NOT work with a stock E500E. The flanges are about an inch wider which would require shorter half shafts in an E500E. But otherwise, mounting points are the same and would bolt-in to the subframe.

Anyway, the high miler is out of commission until next weekend...597,860 miles at the moment so only a bit more than 2000 miles to reach 600K. :-)

Would a diff. From a 1996 e320 work in a 500e, pnp.?

Check it out, I'm really excited about this. Just before my July road trip I took the car to Hoehn Mercedes here in Carlsbad for an alignment. While there I asked my service manager to sign off on my high mileage award form to replace my weathered ones. It took two months but Fedex brought these to me today [emoji106]

I won't be mounting them on the car, instead I will mount them on a plaque and keep them in the house.

For GSXR and anyone else interested, here are a couple pictures of the approx width difference of the flanges between the standard and reinforced differentials.
