• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

Since its founding in late 2008, 500Eboard has become the leading resource on the Internet for all things related to the Mercedes-Benz 500E and E500. In recent years, we have also expanded to include the 400E and E420 models, which are directly related to the 500E/E500.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Has anyone tried the YOUCANIC scanner?

The fact that the description says that "it MAY not work with the pre-1996 models as they are OBD-1" tells you everything you need to know.

I'm happy to bet $100 that it won't work properly with our cars.

Also, 1984 1986 MY W124 models DID NOT have 38-pin adapters. Those weren't phased in until 1992, and as far as I know were ONLY used on the V-8 W124 models. The rest of the W124s used either the 8-pin or 16-pin setup. Definitely neither of my 1995 E320 wagons had 38-pin adapters, and used the 16-pin diagnostic port underhood.

And MY 1986-1992 W124 models also had the 9-pin diagnostic port on the driver's inner fender-well underhood. I believe this was phased out either at the beginning of, or during, the 1993 model year. It's entirely useless on any V-8 W124 anyway......

I struggle with all this scanner stuff on our cars. It is basically a simple problem. You just add a multiplexer and done. But it seems that a science is being made out of this. Not sure why

You need SDS with HHT-Win. Full stop. Almost anything else has limitations.

Youcanic, as Gerry said, almost certainly will not work with our OBD-1 cars. I find it VERY irritating they show the W124 as compatible (see below). I would like to know what exactly, if anything, it will do for W124's. They do NOT list the specific systems, which is another "tell".

Note the 140 chassis video they show is an OBD-2 car (1997). And it only appears to locate 7 modules, when the late 140 should have a dozen or more, IIRC? I'm not a 140 expert so I'm not positive. The early (LH-SFI) 140's had at least 14 separate modules which can store codes and/or display live data.

I did write to their support, this is what I got, so lets see what further comes back:

Hi Stefan,
Thank you for providing VIN WDB1240361CXXXXX. This is a Mercedes W124.036 500E or E500 with the M119 engine. The UCAN II D Pro is the appropriate YOUCANIC scanner for this vehicle. This chassis uses the round Mercedes 38-pin diagnostic connector, so the Mercedes 38-pin adapter will be required for manufacturer-specific access.
Because this is an early Mercedes diagnostic system, exact module access can vary by production date and installed equipment. Possible systems include LH SFI engine management, electronic throttle and cruise control, ABS or ASR, SRS, and climate control. I do not want to promise an exact module list without verification, so I will send the VIN to our development team to confirm the supported modules.

Cool! Let's see what the "development team" says. There are a total of 6-7 modules capable of digital communication, that the scanner should communicate with like SDS/HHT-Win:
  • LH-SFI
  • EZL
  • EGAS/EFP
  • BM/GM
  • ABS/ASR
  • DM (only on North America vehicles)
  • IRCL (only on European models, possibly Japan too?) <-- Not sure if this has digital communication available

There are at least 2 more modules which require analog blink codes only, that the scanner will not communicate with. HHT-Win does not work with these either, you need a hand-held blink code reader for these two (or three, if IRCL is analog only):
  • HVAC
  • SRS (Airbag)

Even if the scanner will communicate digitally with the 6-7 modules, the next question is if it has full functionality, displaying ALL the live data available, shows the digital codes for E-GAS/T-LLR, has the full activation menus, etc same as HHT-Win.

If you can get a money-back guarantee, it would be great to test this out on your car and see what it's capable of vs HHT-Win.

Here is the final feedback:
Hi Stefan,
We apologize, but diagnostic support is not available for your vehicle model.
Best Regards

Very disappointing, but it looks like the only option is HHT-WIN. It is actually quite amazing, as integrating a blink counter is technically no issue at all and the other modules seem to be available the same way on the R129 and W140. I guess they just dont see the market.

Yep - that's what I suspected. At least they fessed up.

Now, will they update their listing to remove the W124/W126/W201/R107? I expect that no, they will not.

I think he should use it as a down payment for a flight and visit CH to join an W124.036 trip through the mountains,......
I am planning to visit CH in September -- to visit the fellow in Zurich who now owns my former 1969 300SEL 6.3, which I sold (not to him) in 2002.

It will be nice to see (and maybe drive) the car after nearly 25 years.

Then you know where you'll have to drive it to.... Looking forward to having a lake side beer
