HELP NEEDED WITH REPLACEMENT HEATER BLOWER REGULATOR

The heater blower on my early 1993 500E now only works on speeds 3 and 4, and the perceived wisdom is that the heater regulator has failed.
On ripping things apart, it appears this is not situated on the heater motor, but behind the front bulkhead! (Strange!?).

The first three pics are of the existing unit, and the fourth pic is of the existing unit alongside the (only) replacement offered by MB - which does not fit due to different plugs/pins.

There are no part numbers, or manufacturer's name, on the existing unit.

Does anyone know where I might source a replacement?

Many thanks.

We expected to find it on the top of the blower motor, but in fact it was situated at the back of the instrument panel.
I eventually sourced a second hand unit from a company called Canstatt - classicmercedesparts.co.uk.

Do you mean in the engine compartment, sort of above / near the brake booster area?

We do not have manual climate control in USA so I have no idea how these are set up.

:doof:

OK, some clarification! My indi did the work, so I had refer to him for more details! Attached is pic of the unit - as you can see, it is situated to the rear of the brake booster. My reason for thinking it was situated behind the dash panel, is because you have to remove the instrument cluster to get access to the nuts which hold the regulator to the bulkhead!

Hope this helps!

That's a very similar unit to the one that is in my 1995 G-wagen, which has "manual" Euro climate control. In the case of the G-wagen, the regulator is located in the air intake airbox underhood. I think I did a HOW-TO in replacing it.

I believe the part was used in very late W123 and early W124 models, interestingly.

R44Raven, are you on manual climate control? I am surprised as my American E500, 1993 as well, has the resistor in the blower motor box. Which I am dealing with countless issues with as well...

Yes, I have manual climate control. Remember, I'm based in the UK, and my car was originally delivered to a buyer in Belgium. I don't think any European E500E's had automatic climate control?

Regarding the resistor which sits atop the blower motor box, I believe these may be still available from MB?

Good luck with solving your problem!

Regarding the unit, I was puzzled there appeared to be no identifying marks on it at all - no MB mark, no part no:, no sign of the manufacturer? Am I not correct that ex-factory, one would expect all parts used in the construction of an MB to at least carry the MB "star", if not also the part number?

The fact there were no markings made things very frustrating when trying to source a replacement. My only option was to flood the internet with pics of the old unit - and classicmercedesparts.co.uk came up with the goods!

I'm wondering Gerry, if the unit fitted to your G-wagen might have some markings (P.S. I wouldn't expect you to remove it to check :p !

As shown in my photos, there was only an MB star on the bottom of the unit, surrounded by the connector pins.
