Ignition Coil

Can someone point me to a DIY on replacing ignition coils. And ACTUAL pictures of them in the car? Thanks in advance! I think my plug wires are routed wrong/wrong length as they dont seem to exit the plastic distributor covers as they should but seem to directly make a beeline for what can only be the coils behind the driver's side headlight area.

Oh I found a pic by gxsr showing the routing. That’s what the little slot on the driver side plastic cover is for!

This should help. A stubby 10 mm ratcheting wrench will make the job easier.

The Beru wires from PartsGeek should be just about perfect for all lengths, right out of the package. They are excellent. I have a set in my parts stash; I have not installed them as my original wires are still in good condition.

My advice is just to take your time. It will take a couple of hours if you lay things out (and you will find you are laying wires out, then routing other wires over and under them. I started with the coil wires and then went to the plug wires.

Awesome thank you! I think I’ll do the plug wires this weekend and then do the coils next week. I still need to purchase the coils.

Seems tight in there for routing spark plug wires. A little bit of an oil leak passenger side cam housing area. Have to research that.

Looks like you have a lot of soft items on top of the engine that need to be replaced:
  • valve cover gaskets
  • cam solenoids
  • cam seals
  • breather hoses
  • Tecalan vacuum lines
  • rubber vacuum line elbows

Gerry, any trick to removing that plastic line (vacuum?)- it dives under the distributor into a black hole. and the 2 plastic looking wires the go into the driver side cam and the (i think) solenoid connector? i think that's the only wat I can squeeze in plug wires through. I'm always afraid of breaking connectors.

This guy had a couple of good M119 videos.

What’s the proper way to disconnect these - from Gerry’s refresh post.
Plus I don’t see the vacuum line. I seem to have one that’s in the way of the plug wires as well

OK slept on it and had some success. Figured out hot to pull the electrical connectors, the one to the cam positioning sensor disintegrated though. But good news is as mentioned just like flossing looks like I am able to manage even with that vacuum line in there!

The 2-pin plastic pin bushing housings for the electrical connectors are only a few bucks each - if they break, buy new ones.

If those Tecalan vacuum tubes are old, replace them - all of them. These are also super cheap, a few bucks per meter of pipe.

:spend:

Any tips on getting spark plug wire number 4 plugged into the spark plugs. I cannot get enough force/leverege to snap it in.

In actuality looks like they’re all very difficult to push in. Everyone I’ve tried. Might have to rig something to get more leverage using the valve cover fastener holes…

Got it! Pushed the captive feature towards the outer edge of the plug to open up the hole. Still a bit of a trick getting it to click in. Push down with a twisting motion and pushing in. Phew!

OK kinda stuck in pulling the headlight. I assume I remove headlight wiper, 1st of all. Second, any recommendations on where to disconnect the water supply hose to the headlight wiper. And does the washer motor come out with the headlight. Kind of looks like at the end of this video

Nevermind here is where it's shown.

Yes if you have 2 coils, both are located behind the drivers headlight assembly, if you remove the plastic black cover on top of the radiator support frame you can see both coils, remove the nut and bolt on the coil cover and they will slide off the top of each coil. I believe it's each coil has 2- 10 mm nuts and slide coil off of mounting studs. now you can move the coil up near the opening of the radiator frame and remove wires, reverse to install.
