Is it possible to test the ECT sensor?

Hi guys,

Is there a nominal value that can be taken from the Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor and the Coolant Temp. Sensor, prior to just R&R..? I have some doubts about the integrity of the one on the car now, but I don't want to just buy parts for the sport of it...

Any tips appreciated..

This is for the 4-pin ECT, btw, which sends a signal to the LH and EZL modules. A digital scanner will show the actual values (in degrees C) from the two sections of the ECT which you can compare to the dash gauge, although if there is a discrepancy the dash gauge is more likely to be at fault.

The two-pin ECT sensor is for the climate control system and has no connection with the engine management systems (fuel/spark). The one-pin ECT sensor is for the dash gauge.

So, of the 4 pins, is it possible to probe them with a multi-meter, (no benz scanner at hand)..? I imagine an electrical impulse should be sent and interpreted elsewhere as degrees, right..? So would the only point of reference would be the indicator in the dash..? Ohhh, hell, I guess I'll just go and replace the darn thing....

Yes, per the specs in the link above, but you'd have to know about what the temp is. An IR thermometer (or probe type) might help. Or just test at room temp which will give you a rough idea if it's in the ballpark or way off. Drain some coolant before swapping the switch or you'll make a big mess...
