Is Speedo mechanical or electronic?

Hi guys
Is the speedometer mechanical or electronic
Where is the drive for it?
Mine stoped working after a deep cleanup under the car
Thanks

On the 500E/E500 (and on all M104- and M119-powered W124 models), it is very definitely electronic.

There is no mechanical drive for it. There is an electrical signal that is supplied via the connector to the back of the instrument cluster.

Gerry I believe only the m119 V8 w124 models have electronic speedometer heads.

M104 320 w124 models have a mechanical cable driven speedometer head if I recall correctly from my own cars and reading about this in the past. (I wanted a electronic speedo head for a 722.6 swap - so bought V8 ones from USA as spares)

You are correct JC -- I just confirmed with a spare cluster for a six-cylinder model that it is indeed mechanical. THIS IS ONLY FOR THE NON-V8 MODELS. All V-8 models DO have an electronic speedometer.

Apologize for the inaccuracy relating to the six-cylinder models.

Where does it go from cluster to flywheel or transmission?
Thanks

For what model exactly please? Your profile is blank and you have not told us the year and model of your w124....

Filling out your profile will be useful for future questions such as this also.

They are NLA new, and have been for years. All USA-spec will be the same part number.

You can use a 400E420 speedo with an electronic correction box as a substitute.

Edit: The .034 donor must have optional ASR if you want the warning triangle in the speedo to illuminate when ASR is active.

If you do use a 400E420 speedo, it must be the version of that speedo with the ASR light (triangle) indicator in the upper center of the speedo, same light as the 500E500 has for its ASR.

A significant number of 400E420s were shipped without ASR, while ALL E500Es were shipped with ASR from the factory.

Cheers,
Gerry
