Issue with USB port no longer working with a mouse (XP Laptop)

I'm running a 2013 version of SDS from a SSD in Windows XP on a Dell D630 laptop.

I have always had the following Wizard pop up when connecting a mouse (or other hardware e.g. Flash drives):

I recently tried to get it to stop displaying when connecting a mouse (as it is a bit of an annoyance) and I tried to use the Wizard.

Unfortunately it didn't work and now I cannot use the mouse unless it is connected to the lower of the 2 USB ports.

I tried having a nose into Hardware settings in Control Panel etc. (didn't change anything) but can't find how to reinstate the upper USB port.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks!!

I would try updating drivers from Dell and also possibly updating the BIOS, BUT take note of your current versions so you can go back if necessary. That's some really old hardware running very old software so updating too much might make things worse. Tread carefully.

Thank you for the quick reply, I don’t have it connected to the internet so I’ll probably just have to live with it unless I can get them on a USB flash drive.

I’ll check first if anything like system restore etc. is available too.

I’m not part of the 500Eboard member support help desk, but my recommendation is to get one of the new tablet based systems from ChinaCarDiag.

I think I have some posts about it in the De-Coding sub-forum.

I’d love to upgrade but 2 kids at Uni plus our new government screwing every penny out of the working man means times are hard at the moment.

Go to My Computer / System Properties / Device Manager. and look around the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" part. You might discover some clues about the USB / mouse issues you face. Pics below:

Referring this to the 500Eboard tech support staffers we have on hand who specialize in Dell laptops and Windows.
Thanks to the 500Eboard PC Technical Support Help Desk department for their efforts and suggestions toward solving @R129 UK's issue.

The @gsxr is also a Windows XP guru (that's the current OS that he runs), so he should have some additional suggestions to offer.

I'm sure we are quite there yet @gerryvz.

@Jlaa please see below, I have 15 USB controllers listed which seems a bit excessive when there are only 4 physical USB ports- any thoughts or should I take this to a meister like @gsxr :) or an XP specific forum?

That seems like a lot of controllers. What happens when you click on each and cycle through the tabs? (power, driver, details, power mgmt...)

I’ll go through them all and note any details which vary between them and advise as soon as I can.

Thanks for your continued assistance.

@Jlaa please see below, my initial findings and some further details.

I opened one of each of the 3 differently named USB controllers:

The "Generic USB Hub" (1) shows 3 ports available but I have 4 physical ports - is this something to pursue?

I plugged a USB mouse into each USB port and with all 4 the touchpad works but the mouse only works with 3 - I had previously only been checking the 2 side USB ports, not the 2 on the rear.

Secondly, each of the different types of port description have different tabs:

Do you have any suggestions from the above before I go digging deeper into the setting of each of the 15 entries?

Glancing at each of the entries, they all seem quite similar except the Bandwidth under the "Advanced" tab and things like I/O Range and IRQs under the "Resources" tab which seems about right.

Many thanks.

I had the mouse working on 3 out of the 4 ports and I had hoped to get it working properly on all 4 as I plan to sell it once I'm up to speed with my M6+ setup which is on the way to me as I type...
