Leather spray paint removal

I looked at a car that was overall quite good except that the selling dealer used a spray can product to "refinish" the seats and steering wheel. It looks good from a distance but up close it looks and feels bad. And it looks like it will start cracking soon. Anyone have experience removing this junk?

Bummer... Problem is you would probably do more damage trying to remove whatever they applied (and I'd be willing to be they didn't clean / prep the surfaces properly anyways). Your best bet would be probably one of the following options:


1. Remove them and have them possibly professionally refinished by a leather specialist

2. See if you can source replacement seat covers and a steering wheel from another car

3. If the car was nice enough just justify it bite the bullet and buy replacement seat covers from a aftermarket outfit and have the existing steering wheel recovered.

Personally I would stick with options 2 or 3

Melville: There is a family of leather products highly recommended on another MB forum I follow. I've used 2 of the products and the results were very good. Check out www.leatherique.com. Maybe some folks on this forum are familiar with Leatherique and will chime in.

Hi,
An English friend of mine had the same problem with his old Rolls Royce silver shadow after he asked a "professional" to renew the seats : the "solution" was worse than the "problem".
He looked for advice and was told to grease the painted leather as much as possible, let the grease penetrate the "paint" for few hours and then gently rub the paint with a soft cloth.
He was quite please with the result so hope it works for you

Leatherique has already proven itself to remove dye from Mercedes seats, so try their leather cleaner.

Remember, leather has to breath. Painting it or sealing w silicone is death.
