M119 "54" Stamp

Hi Guys,

I recently imported one of the "Japan Special" 400E 4.2 AMG Stage III W124 cars, and was poking around the back of the motor behind Cyl #8 and noticed a stamp where I would usually expect to see any AMG markings on earlier motors regarding displacement, and noticed a single stamp that reads "54". Couldn't tell if there was a " . " inbetween but didn't appear so. Did not see anything related to AMG either, and this is a 1993 built car with the serial number stamped separately on the front of the motor. Is there any world that would make sense that this would something in regards to displacement of the block? If so, what's the least invasive way to determine that to be the case? Thanks for your help and insight, including a photo of the stamp for reference.

You can measure stroke via spark plug hole, to see if it may be larger displacement. Does the engine serial match the datacard?

Yep. Same engine number as the data-card. I don't think a 400 Block would be able to be built out to a 5.4? I just don't know why that 54 would be there for any other reason.

VIN: WDB1240341C020370
Engine number is: 119975 12 012593

It's most likely a stock short block. But, for grins, check the casting number on the side of the block, behind the driver side engine mount bracket.

I would be surprised if they put a stroker crank into a 4.2L block. The "54" mark may not indicate anything substantial. Does the car seem to have normal 4.2 power/torque?
