M119 heaviest pulley?

Belt tensioner pulley is probably the lightest, since it's plastic on the '92... 93-up is metal and dunno if the alternator pulley is lighter.

Heaviest is definitely the crank pulley.

From, what is it, '96 the balansing Wheel pulley is of a much lighter version, E420, E50, E60 W210, also have that, probably S500 too
i.e. all M119 from '96 up.
 
Anyone know which of the M119 pulleys is the heaviest?

Comparing the different pulleys complete weight based on functionality and required rotational forces, I would guess the AC pump has the heaviest due to the clutch inside. That's a pretty heavy thingy, but luckily it doesn't rotate all the time - well it depends on which climate we speak. The balancer is a separate part from the crank pulley, however the crank pulley may be heavier than the AC pump pulley though, I've never held one.

no offence against threadstarter..but i found it to be abit of a "stupid" question..its kinda obvious that the crank pulley is the heaviest :)

Anyone know if it is a direct fit? Are the two pulleys the same diameter? Looks like the '96 pulley is one piece with the balancer.
 
95-up is the 1-piece assembly and also uses a different bolt+washer, and different torque setting. Not sure if you can upgrade easily, don't recall anyone doing this in the past...

Like this M119 970 s500, direct fit? I Think it is, why should they change, I did the front seal on the E50, nothing odd there
and a look on the now dismantled W210 E60, same thing there.

Hey taxi driver, can you measure the diameter of the M119 970 s500 pulley? The bolt might change but if its the same thread it should thread right on.

No problemo,
1:st tapemeassure Points at the rubber bond- harmonic bal. Wheel to pulley.
3:rd see balance weights inside of pulley.
4:th perfect alignment, gen. air pump, tensioner, steering pump from the donor 400E motor but the
blank pulley and the pod it sits on are from the E50, advantage: you use the later plasticblade
fan screwed onto the visible thread , as the pod sits lower than the older type you will gain space
cooler to fan and also have a lighter fanblade assy.

Ok thanks so the pod and pulley have to be used from the E50? Which is the smog pump delete, correct? Will the late tyle delete replace the early style delete? Maybe the late style delete has a lower cost. Dave, would you know if the '92 pulley will fit on the '93 and up?

Can you explain exactly what you want to do - what pulleys on which engine, for what reason, etc? Hard to answer accurately without more info.

BTW - the 1992 engines with 8-rib belt have some pulley diameters that are slightly different than the 93-up 6-rib setup. If you mix & match anything, it may require a custom belt length.

Remember that if the crank pulley / hub comes off for any reason, you should replace the seal on principle, and you will need to find a way to lock the crankshaft to properly torque the center bolt. This is difficult to do with the engine out of the car.

The Fan pulley, I guess is same on all, 119 980/85 ME jet. motors as is the pod/bearing housing it sits on, all bebefits the lighter plastic fan.
The Airpump delete is Another matter.
This coversion shurely ´will shave off some rotating mass but wheather it is balanced as a whole crank assembly or the pulley/balancer sole?
I don't know but if one is to seriously build a motor from the bottom up, I would start with the crank assembly and include the starter/flex disc. balancing i.e.

I was just out in the garage and measured the diameter on the air pump pulleys on both of my cars, plus I have a new EARLY air pump replacement bracket in house.
- early air pump pulley OD: 105 mm
- late air pump pulley OD: 90 mm
- early replacement bracket pulley OD: 70 mm

The diameters are measured on the edge on the ribs where the belt runs. I used a ruler so the dimensiones are approximately, say +/- 1 mm, but they are good for comparison. This shows that both the early and late air pump pulleys are quite bigger than the early replacement bracket pulley, which next means that a shorter belt is needed in both cases. But - I don't know the exact position of the replacement pulley, if it is designed to be more outwards from the engine, it may not need a shorter belt. AFAIK has a few members installed the replacement bracket, would be nice if they could chime in on this.
