M119 Intake manifold and injector compatability

Are all M119 intake manifolds the same part number or compatible?
I want to harvest a manifold and possibly injectors to go into my 1993 Mercedes 500e.
I want to redo the upper intake to lower intake seals and have it all ready to bolt on as soon as I remove mine.

I am looking at harvesting 400e, w140 400 or 500 series cars between 1992-1995.

Hi, no definately not! for what I know, there are Three maybe four that differ quite a bit. First you have the 400E420 with the smallest
tracts/runners/ports then the 500E or 5liter ones (the AMG 6liter had the same but ported and polished) wich we can call the medium one.

Then lastly what I know, there is the HWA alas, AMG E50/60 from 1996 M119 980 on the other M119 980's I belive are eqv.with the 5liter
of the older variety. The injectors have, early, 4holes later 2holes jet. Inj. from M119 98x Me jet. can also be used.

Stay away from the 4.2 manifolds, too narrow....

Absolutely not.

To answer your question up front:
  1. You can use the bottom portion of the intake manifold of any 119.97X variant of the engine, from any chassis.
  2. For an E500E application, you can only use the upper portion of the intake manifold from a 5-liter engine that was used on the 500SEL/S500, or 1993-1996 500SL/SL500 models with the LH injection engine.
  3. I would stick with LH injectors as used on 5-liter cars (400E/E420 cars' injectors will work from the appropriate year). Why are you replacing your injectors? They are very durable and should not need replacement. They can be cleaned and serviced.
  4. Note that there are two types of injectors used with the E500E models -- early and late. The "late" injectors are used as of engine 005782, which would have equated roughly to 1994 model year cars starting around VIN WDB1240361B834393, produced starting in August, 1993. The "late" LH injectors are indeed shared with the ME-injected engines.
  5. Since your car is a 1993 US model year 500E, it will require the "early" injectors per above, from equivalent model year (1992 or 1993) 5-liter and 4.2-liter cars.
More background/context:

The intake manifolds are very different for different generations of the M119 (CIS-E 119.96X, LH 119.97X, and ME 119.98X), as well as even different within the same generation of engine.

For example, for the M119.974 (W124, 5L) engine as used in the E500E:
  • The lower intake manifold portion (part number 119 140 22 01 or 119 140 63 01; interchangeable), is shared fully with all members of the LH-injected M119.97X family. However, it is not shared with the 119.96X or 119.98X engines.
  • The upper intake manifold portion (119 140 20 01 as used on the E500E), is shared ONLY with the 119.970 (W140, 5L) and 119.972 (R129, 5L) engines. It is **NOT** shared with the 400E and E420 models, which have their own specific upper intake manifold part (119 140 28 01) which is specific to the 119.975 (E420/400E, 4.2L) and 119.971 (W140, 4.2L) variants of the engine.
Quick table about the M119.97X engine variants:
  • 119.970: W140 chassis only, 5-liter displacement
  • 119.971: W140 chassis only, 4.2-liter displacement
  • 119.972: R129 chassis only, 5-liter displacement
  • 119.974: W124 chassis only, 5-liter displacement
  • 119.975: W124 chassis only, 4.2-liter displacement

Apologies for the confusing post, which I realize is "all over the place."

Cheers,
Gerry

"However, it is not shared with the 119.96X or 119.98X engines."
For the lower intake manifold, 960 we all know is very diffrent but the 980 casting
is very much the same, allthough there is not machined for the EGR pipe or bored for the EGR valve. I did use that 980 plenum as we can say, I
also did the EGR delete, exellent as there are no holes to block off, it can be said, the plenum on my 400E was different from the 500E50 casting
allthough it can be interchanged I see its design to be less "flow friendly"

A hard work but Worth it, if you are to tune the motor porting & polishing the Runners along with a portmatch is a very good ide'a the EGR delete
I can also recommend.

However, for the record, the intake manifold for the 119.98X engine (for example, as used on the S500 W140 with the 119.980 engine) is as follows:

  • Upper intake manifold: 119 140 89 01 (can be used on any 119.98X engine, including .980, .981, .982 and .985 variants)
  • Lower intake manifold: 119 140 87 01 (can be used on any 119.98X engine, including .980, .981, .982 and .985 variants)

For the earlier, CIS-E-injected variant of the 119 engine, as in 119.960 in the early 500SL, the following part numbers apply:

  • Upper intake manifold: 119 140 11 01
  • Lower intake manifold: 119 140 06 01

Steve,

No response on Injectors? I thought all 400/500 M119's took the same injector. I'm not infront of the EPC, so no comment on the .98X engines. But I believe they are interchangeable for earlier ones(92-95). If you have different color, I think it would be wise to get a set.

Samiam44,
I think you are correct on the injectors.
I will probably take mine in for a professional cleaning and inspection.

Unless you are experiencing issues... just feed the car a bottle of Red Line SI-1. All professional cleaning does is run some solvents through and maybe check flow. The injectors cannot be disassembed, repaired, or adjusted.

I'm in agreement with Dave!!

I would not get them cleaned... could be as expensive as an engine. If there is an issue with a particular injector- I'd find a same spray pattern one, get it checked and install it.

Note what I said earlier with regard to injectors.

I got the manifold from a 93 w140 5.0.
Someone had already taken the rail and injectors.
There is one injector insulator missing from the manifold.
I will replace them all.

Go with Elring or MB OE. No Reinz.
I also prefer Elring or MB OE.

Interestingly... the M119 MB OE head gaskets are made by, you guessed it, Victor Reinz. Sauceman found this out when he did his cylinder head refresh.

Victor Reinz is indeed an MB OEM for some gaskets and parts, as is Elring and probably other manufacturers.

However, from what I have observed, Reinz may be one of those OEMs who provide different product lines as their branded "aftermarket" products, vs. the products they provide to MB to their spec. Meaning a Reinz gasket you get from MB as an OE part, could be a different design/spec from their aftermarket part.

I have only used Elring and MB OE gaskets (which were made by Elring) for the M117 and M104 top-end jobs that I have done. My understanding has been that MB OE M119 gaskets have been made by Victor Reinz.

I did place the M117 Elring and MB OE (Elring-manufactured) intake manifold gaskets side by side, and could not tell a difference.

That said, I would not use an "aftermarket" branded Victor Reinz gasket on my vehicle. I would use an MB OE gasket (if it were made by Reinz) on my cars, and I would use any Elring (aftermarket branded or MB OE) on my cars.

That's just me, though.

I added some links to the above post, for folks' reference. Again, my opinions about MB OE and Elring are just that -- my opinions. I know there are folks out there who swear by Victor Reinz, and that's fine.

I have read more than a couple of bad stories out there about Reinz gaskets failing. I have never read a story about an Elring gasket failing (not saying that these stories are not out there). I do personally know credible/knowledgeable MB shops and mechanics in Germany who use Reinz aftermarket gaskets.

Throwing gasoline on the fire, the OE MB / AMG M119 6L head gaskets (at ~$1k/ea) are made by... Elring.

I'm not aware of any Elring head gaskets available for standard M119 5L though.

:duck:

I think the original request was about intake manifold gaskets, no? IM gaskets are not subjected to as much stress as head gaskets, so I'd probably be OK with a Reinz aftermarket intake manifold gasket, but if an Elring or MBOE was available, I'd select one of those brands first.

Rgds,
Gerry

Yes, we have strayed slightly from injectors. Getting back on topic, what's the best engine oil to use with new injectors?

:chainyank:

Yoink accepted.

We should also discuss fuel injector seals and o-rings as part of this thread.
