Thanks Dave. I purchased 2 used MAFs on ebay over the weekend. Its a roll of the dice honestly...
On the bright side, it seems used MAF's have a decent chance of being good and working properly. However, there's no way to confirm without viewing live data on HHT-Win.
... and you are correct....what does tested even mean? How are they testing them?
When I have an MAF for sale, I test by installing it on my car and viewing live data in HHT-Win. This allows verifying the airflow readings are in the normal range at various RPM's. I'll also drive the car for ~500 miles or so to get multiple heat cycles. If all that goes well, and there are no fault codes, I call it "tested". I think any eBay seller that claims their MAF is "tested" means "
well, the engine ran with it installed", which is not helpful because the engine will run even if the MAF is disconnected.
The platinum wire degrades with burn off cycles over time. They will all "wear out" eventually.
True, eventually they will die. But so far I've only experienced MAF's that either work properly, or are fully dead. Haven't seen one that's intermittent (yet).
Anyone try the Chinese reman units yet? I am wondering what "reman" means to them. Are they replacing wires and calibrating to a known flow rate? Their description is vague.
Nobody I know has tried a Chinese reman. The vast majority appear to be for other engines, not M119. I wouldn't trust any of these without a
lot more information about what cores they are using, and what their reman process involves. That, and if being shipped from China, there could be steep duties due on delivery (as discussed
here).
Bosch recalibrated the bridge and replaced the platty wires. The fun of working on the LH is the challenge to me. It is a masterpiece of tech for the late 70s, early 80s!
I wish Bosch was still remanufacturing these. Eventually the supply of good used ones could dry up...
