Drawbacks? They can catch on fire and burn vigorously.... I'd say that's a minuscule risk however . Did you know that this is where the term "mag wheels" came from?
Those are nice looking wheels and will probably be lighter than most other alloy wheels, I reckon. I think that magnesium wheels will tend to chip rather than bend, and will also be more difficult to repair, but that is just speculation on my part. Sorry not to be of real help.
What he^ said. Those are unusually designed for magnesium wheels. They are normally much more race-inspired as opposed to street style. The few sets I've seen have all clearly stated "For Track Use Only". Poor conditions of public roads have been known to crack and destroy magnesium wheels. I've seen this first hand when a spoke cracked straight through on a 12-spoke wheel. Yours may be less susceptible to this as the spoke design looks stronger.
+1. Magnesium is used on underwater demolition fuses. Extremely volatile stuff under those conditions. Burns uncontrollably...a great feature to ensure what you want to go boom goes boom.
I'd be surprised if its still used for wheels these days.
Light, strong, yet brittle. Minimal modulus of elasticity. As others mention, they are prone to break instead of bend when the going gets rough.
If the wheels you are/were considering are in fact based on magnesium, consider something else no matter how cool they look.
These wheels remind me of the Gemballas that Viking shows in his owner/rebuild thread he's working on. Get you could b\pick those yup at a good price if you like the look.
