Mojave Mile - May 5+6, 2012

Uh, guys, you might want to start a new thread for CIS diagnostics and/or transmission programming. Neither are Mojave-related...

:fish:

Geeze Dave. A real quick excursion OT wasn't gonna hurt anybody.

OK then, Jono, could you please just PM me your answers? I really don't want to start two new threads on these two topics just to get a couple of quick answers. If anybody else wants to, please feel free.

Michael: Dave is on a slow, but steady, evolution away from the W124 toward more modern MBs.

"Evolution"? If one is heading towards newer MBs, I'd call that a DECLINE! (Again, I remind you all how everybody but Glen roasted me when I fantasized openly about M119 powered W210s on the old site.)

Oops, we're off topic again!
Regards, Eric

Why don't you want to start a new thread or two on these topics? You're guaranteed to end up posting multiple replies about it and there's no such thing as a "quick answer". The whole idea behind the forum is to have different issues separated with recognizable thread titles. Otherwise, who's gonna click on a search result with "Mojave" in the title when they're looking for CIS or transmission stuff?

:whack:

Most searches that I know of will search all threads for your key words if you pick the option that tells them to search the entire threads, not just the titles. One is wise to choose that broader search option as one would be eliminating too many discussions on their chosen topic if they don't.

Yes, but someone searching for CIS-E diagnostics would likely be confused by a thread titled "Mojave Mile" and might not click on it. It's best to at least mostly stay on topic within a given thread, otherwise you end up with a real mess. Taken to the extreme, why would we have threads at all? Just make it one giant bulletin board where you post all your 500E random thoughts and use "search" to sort it out. Not for me, thank you berry much...

:seesaw:

If the admins weren't so old and lazy :wheelchair:

they'd have split the thread for you, Eric. So much for service.. ! :D :p

:run:

:oh__dont_go_there_g

I think I just found my new favorite smiley.

It's the old conundrum: give a man a fish, vs. teach a man to fish. Need to train these young whippersnappers to keep things neat in the first place so we don't need to clean up after them all the time! Darn kids... *shakes cane*

:wheelchair:

Choose your battles wisely, oh careful and wise one.

Great, now we've gone off topic.
:tyrannosaurus:

Way to set an example, Dave

The super ironic thing here is that I'm one of the oldest guys on this site! (I'm 50!) I'm even older than Uncle Gerry!

Child.

I'm 58, today !!!

Old Ron aka Mr. Cheerful
"Thank God I'm not 25, I'd have longer to live"

PS: It's funny, I just read a story about a Time Capsule that is being unsealed after 25 years... I have boxes of paperwork that I need to go through that are older than that.

Yeah, just recently I came across a spare light switch for my 70 Challenger, a car I sold over 30 years ago!

Awesome link, awsome photos - thanks for posting, Justin! If you look closely you'll see the E500 was in two photos, and the back end of the W210 was just visible in one of the pics. I didn't realize it was a "bad air day" when we were running, lol... or that the BRC was shooting for 227. (!!!)

:deniro:

Dave: that's me behind the dupont car in the blurry part of the image, picking up the slip, right?

As pedestrian as the 199 color looks on these e500e cars, you gotta admit.. it's still a pretty schway color, looks good going triple digits
:e500launch:

Not sure about the Dupont pics... hard to tell. The .036 looks great at triple digits in any color, lol!

For those not familiar with the BRC... here's a little clip worth watching. The in-car shots of the Silver State showing the GPS at a steady 210-220 are mind boggling:

Corvette at 2:05 :buggin: I understand why they take such precautions with safety now.

Dave, I know what we're going to do today (or sometime in the near future): establish a following for the w124 or w210. Big Red plays the bad ass, Herbie the cutie patootie, and but what for the benz now. Hmmm. :detective: The benz is usually a bad guy's car in the movies, maybe it should go that direction... ?

Jim Peruto set a new Guinness world record for speed on a public highway at the spring Nevada Open Road Challenge on May 20th, with a course average of 217.7750 mph in his "modified" 2006 Dodge Charger. Also, the Nevada Highways Dept is renaming Hwy 318 as the Silver State Classic Challenge Highway in honor of the event.

AVERAGE speed? Holy cow, what was his top speed? Wonder what tyres can survive that kind of extended punishment. Wow.

Unreal. In a 2006 Charger, no less. I'm assuming the bodywork had to be modified to keep the car stable at those speeds... (??)

It was a NASCAR Charger, i.e., not much "Charger" at all, with BIG rear wing. Apparently he did the Narrows at 140mph, so must have really hauled ass to keep that average!

I'd love to post the YouTube clip but can't figure it out :-( Tried placing the embed link between [ youtube] [ /youtube] but only get a blank space...so here is the link: http://youtu.be/nnamuNS36LY

Got it - that was all NASCAR, and is barely related to the street car. Makes sense now. Thanks for the link!!

From the deafening silence, I'm assuming nobody on the forum made it to the Mojave Magnum on June 2-3...? :runexe:

Results are posted on their website here. Some pretty impressive numbers for the 1.5 mile course, they noted there was a serious tailwind on Saturday which helped boost the numbers (to quote Napoleon Dynamite... LUCKY!!!)

There was one 2004 Mercedes SL55 which had several runs around 166mph, two at 172, and one run in excess of 175mph. Wow. I wonder if the 170+ runs were tailwind assisted while the 166's were not. Hmmm. The 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago SV had nine attempts above 197mph and finally got one at 200.1, bet Ginger was happy with that one! Some dude from Boise showed up a Vette and Porsche and ran near 200mph with both.

:roadrunner:

I couldn't make it :( Would have loved to go, though! To quote a Movie Title: Tomorrow Is Another Day.

I'm looking towards the September dates, who else will make it? Entries for the September 29-30 Mojave Mile will open on July 1 at 8 AM PDT.

Yes but I sure wish it was a mile and a half. Why the change back to only one mile?

There may be an issue though. They have a "No body damage" clause in the rules that Spacy Casey pointed out to me. Dave says that SC is interpreting the rules a little too stringently but SC's response to that is: "He hasn't seen the car up close and in person like I have." (I think SC is just being negative towards B3 cause B3 always kicks his ass at the drag strip.) So I need to E-mail some pics to the judges like Dave said just to be sure that they aren't going to be too anal about it. If they won't let B3 run I'll have to bring B4, and there's no way I could have B4 ready in time for the Sept. date so that would force me to have to wait for the next one.

Uncle Gerry, this "Auto Save" feature is just SO BITCHEN! We just had a quick brown-out here just as I was finishing this post that caused the computer to restart. On any other site I would have lost the post but not here! For me this is a very big deal because I'm a slow typer. Thanks!

Just want to ask if anyone else is planing to attend the September 29-30 dates? So far, Eric is the only other driver who is planing to attend...pending Eric's resolution to the "body damage" clause.

This might be too early to ask, but I need to plan ahead and need to know who is definitely going to try to make it...otherwise, I have Willow Springs events coming up and I need to set come $ aside for new wheels and tires.

So...if nobody responds by the 21st of this month, I will not be attending the September 29-30 dates as well.

So, based on the silence I'm guessing no one is planing to attend the next event? Then I'm out as well.

I'd go if I could! But I can't... the final Gold Cup points race is on the same day here at my local track. (And, I can't afford another 2000 mile round trip at the moment.) The locals in SoCal are running out of excuses though. What happened to Eric? Sauceman? Etc? Maybe Jano will go back just to try and improve his previous 145 clocking!

:deniro:

That's in conference season, I'm going to be all over the US, unlikely will get a chance to make it out. Checking schedule.

Eric must not be checking the thread, although when we spoke, I mentioned that if he'll go I would go as well. Plus he's planing the family move up north, so I'm betting he's got other items on his plate. Maybe the Sauceman is planing to attend the Starfest 2012 in Phoenix in lieu of Mojave.

No worries, maybe on the next Mojave date we can meet. I got the Willow Springs event coming up, so I'm gonna get ready for that in the meantime.

Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say no to this Sept. event. Steve, you and I can hang any time. I'll wait for a larger crowd. :)

"Larger crowd"...? ROTFL! I think Jano and I had the biggest crowd that will ever appear at any track-related .036 event. (I'm hoping people will prove me very wrong, but so far, well.... ummm....)

:hornets:

Well, if you count Eric, we've had 3-4 w124 guys at one event before! I'm not saying huge, but if I'm gonna drive that far, I'll wait until some out of state folks plan to show.

Well, if you count Eric...
That's probably a thread all its own. :D :D

Good point, I forgot you have had at least 3 down at the dragstrip there. I'm still surprised how little interest there has been in Mojave. You can't go anywhere near 150mph without risk of going to jail thanks to some overzealous cop. But you can do it at Mojave multiple times and get official speeds, far more accurate than speedo readings. (I think that probably scares some people away, they're afraid to find out their car isn't as fast as they claim it is.)

:hiding:

Jeff held a gtg a couple years ago and there were a good number of us that showed up, chatted a bit, then went to Denny's. Someone got a photo of it somewhere. Not quite the dragstrip, but was fun :)

I don't know how much the dragstrip costs, but it's both closer and I will assume much cheaper than Mojave. I think it's worth the 4 hour round trip, getting up at 5am to make it by opening, wearing a helmet and racing gloves, and the $200 ticket to go ~150mph for several runs, but others might not!

I really want to try the longer magnum run! :driving:
