Lovely pre facelift car. I have a real soft spot for E30's. I owned a 1988 E30 318i with the M40 engine in the mid 90's. It was the first year of the facelift models. Prior to it, I owned an Opel Manta GT/E which had some serious steering issues that made the manual steering wheel incredibly hard to steer. I knew nothing about cars and remembered when I first drove it, that I would sweat from my brow at anything under 40MPH. Long story short, about a year later, I got used to it and it became normal.

The following summer, I was home at my parents house in west London and my mother needed a car so she asked me to look at this 88 318i. The guy bought it the house and I took it for a short test drive and told her it was fine to buy and went out with friends. When I got home, my father was waiting for me and he somewhat 'annoyed'. He asked me how I could let my mother buy a car without power steering. I was like "It doesn't have power steering?'. Needless to say, my father put me on a payment plan, and bought the car from my mother. She went on to get something else. I used it through college and until I moved here to the US. It was super basic, no PS, crank windows and a crank sunroof.

I wouldn't mind another E30, maybe a 325IC someday. They're getting harder to find in nice shape.

I was recently staying in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee when me and my sons were at Red Bull Ring in Spielberg watching Formula 1. Well, I didn't see that BMW, it was just a coincidence with us being in that particular city, Klagenfurt, 2000km from my city here in Norway.
