Odometer quit after I reset the trip?

Filled up on the way up to a family Thanksgiving and reset the trip but it and the regular odo never moved again. All other speedo functionand cruse is normal so??

If both odo's are dead, and the speedo works, it's time for some repair work. Either have a VDO shop repair it, or search the forum for info on how to replace the gears which are probably broken/stripped. It's not a common failure, but does happen...

To start with, never reset the trip meter with the car in motion. You must be completely stopped before pressing the button.

If you are lucky, pressing the button again may get it working but don't count on it. More than likely a small gear came off a shaft inside the speedo.

Oops! I usually do it while parked at the pump, but I often forget and press it a mile or two into the next trip.

Hit it while stopped at the pump and noticed a mile or so down the road that neither had moved since. Yep first thing I tried was hitting the reset button a couple times and nada.

Thanks got to get it back as I am a stickler on maintenance schedules and without the odo---.

I have also heard that said my entire MB life, but that caution is not in any owners manual that I have ever seen, and disassembly of a number of odometers over the years has presented no evidence that resetting them when in motion should cause a problem. I have seen many of them failed in such a manner that the disturbance of a reset was probably the last thing that pushed them "over the edge", but these were failures that would've happened whether the gearset was in motion or not. I don't know what could have led to the prevalence of this admonishment other than most people probably do reset them when in motion and found them in operative immediately after that...

I had it happen to me years ago in my 300E and also my daughters 190E. I suppose the problem would have surfaced regardless but I've been careful since. My '95 wagon has never had a problem in the close to 14 years and 250k+ miles I've put on it, so...

FWIW, my odometers and trip meters broke at the same time on both E420's. Both occurred above 170,000 miles. Coincidentally, at least one set stopped working after I was pulling away from a gas pump and resetting the trip meter. The one large gear and one small gear were both missing teeth when I pulled them out. Fortunately, the kit they sell on Ebay contains both large gears and the small one too. I think there is a writeup on this subject somewhere on the forum. If you decide to change the gears, put some Gleitpaste (sunroof lube) on the gears and it will keep them from clicking.

Hmmm this has never happened to me or anyone I know even though we have alot of Mercedes with stratospheric mileages back home in Ghana

It's a age/enviroment issue, not mileage.

Mine failed at 124K, small gear was mush.
