Klink,

CIS-E injectors are designed for about an 80K service life. Mine went about 200,000 miles, LOL. And I had a bad case of leakdown, and then nasty starting.

They may get over-diagnosed for issues, but my issues sure cleared up with their replacement. I should have replaced them when I did the M117 top-end rebuild, but it was literally the only part that I DIDN'T replace! I even replaced the o-rings and injector holders. I was a TOTAL lamer with that one, fer sure.

Here's my saga: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1926

:lightning:

Cheers,
Gerry

Another great "How-To" by the way!

The current part number for the intake tubes is 119 090 14 82, and of course, two tubes are required.

In the US, the official MB retail price is around USD $72 each, so I'd expect them to be around GBP 50 each in the UK, perhaps a bit less?

It's an often overlooked part that really will freshen up the engine compartment. Just don't put any "bro shine" on the tubes :agree:

Some years ago, I did a "HOW-TO" article on the replacement of these tubes. It's a long and drawn-out process. Even 2Phast said it was three-hour replacement job !!

The HOW-TO is located here: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=759

Cheers,
Gerry
They're only 47$ here + free shipping with the set and no sales tax
http://www.rmeuropean.com/Part-Numb...er-Housing-__1190901482_O-prd-E_6BB4EABD.aspx That should be an official MB part no?

You could buy a burger with that 6$! :agree:

Oh indeed, they do happen, and a leak down condition like you were describing usually produces pretty dramatic symptoms. It's just that over the years I have seen them replaced for no end of refinement issues, like idle quality, usually to no improvement, and often to a worsening of whatever the refinement issue was.

They are like back surgery. Everybody thinks they need them, and everybody is told they need them, but almost nobody experiences that dramatic improvement that the replacement is reputed to bring, unless their condition was just dramatically bad to begin with.

Which reminds me, that ranks them together with cartoon size wheels and tires. Almost always done, but not one man in a thousand has an ego allowing him to admit, even if only to himself, "crap, that was a mistake"...
:klink:

Impressive Klink. I treat people with back pain all day everyday, and I can't tell you how true this quote is. Bravo my friend! :klink:

Right guys, thanks for all the help on here. Showed my specialist your posts and he agreed as only cylinder 8 was giving issues and so we held back from replacing the injector (which also means the fuel rail didn't have to come off / save on labour costs). FPR replaced and the rough idle has gone! Also the car is cranking fine, starts perfectly hot or cold, no backfiring and revs cleanly. The throttle issue explained earlier was the MAF. Replaced the MAF from a 93' W140 S500 coupe and it's working perfectly again.

While the car was in, I also had the following done:

- Coolant flushed out and replaced
- Gearbox oil and filter replaced (they said filter was a larger one...?)
- Diff oil replaced
- All engine breather hoses replaced (plastic was brittle and breaking off so new MB items bought)
- FPR replaced (MB part as the Bosch unit I got was not correct)
- SLS reservoir pipe and clips replaced due to a leak and fluid topped up
- Plugged into diagnostics again with no error codes returning :)

All in all very happy :) I will be replacing the spark plugs with MB items (as heard they are more superior to Bosch units and they took a hammering recently) and potentially changing the dist caps and arms to Bosch from the Beru items I have (to try and avoid any issues from them in the future).

Next jobs on the agenda are to fit the new alloys I bought along with a new set of discs and pads all around. I think I will be getting the MB discs and pads (as they're about £350 from the main dealer and should be the right parts) and will also fit metal braided brake hoses (to improve the brake feel).

In the meantime I've bought Rainbow W124 front and rear speakers and I will shortly be ordering an Alpine Bluetooth headunit and 1000w active subwoofer for the boot (as the W124 lacks at bass at all!). My rear speakers are also currently dead (no sound) so need to see what the situation there is.

Tonnes of other stuff which I have listed out to do over the summer but will attack them gradually - I will get a list up here.

Thanks for reading - a few photos from the garage yesterday (car also clicked over 172,000km on the drive back):

Glad to hear your Tech was happy to listen and that it's now sorted. Now enjoy the damn thing ! ;)

If you're gonna go down this route again make sure to check the insulators under the rotors, inspect, clean or even replace (if you do replace you shouldn't have to worry about 'em for a very long time) and at least change the rubber ring/seal.

Love the number plate , btw .

Cheers all.

Now I tried to fit the alloys on but the spacers are all wrong for the front (they do not fit the hub). The spacers currently on the car are 22mm (!) Lorinser's on an 8J alloy. The spacers supplied with the alloys are 12mm (same bore size) but seem too small for the hub (don't mount) but they are 66.5...quite confused, only thing I can think of is that the 12mm spacers have been modded (to be smaller) but they look stock if i'm honest.

Can anyone point me towards a standard set of spacers I can pickup for the car to run with these Lorinsers?

Cheers

Bill

A couple pictures of the spacers might provide an answer. Some folks have had interference with the dust cap utilizing spacers. Check for spacer / dust cap interference.

Drew - not sure I follow? I will get photos up today

Hub centric spacers are manufactured with a "step" on the wheel side of the hub centering hole. This allows for adequate material on the wheel side for the male centering flange. On some spacers, usually 5-12mm sizes, the depth of the hub side opening prior to this step is less than is needed to clear the dust cap. Check to make sure your dust caps are fully seated. I've included a picture of a Lorinser spacer so others can see the groove for the circle wire clip that holds these spacers in the wheel. They can be quite hard to remove from the wheel. On the opposite side they are able to accept various size hub centric rings.

Even though the seller gave you what he termed the correct bolts I would not mount them without checking very carefully, again, especially in the rear. Too long and they will contact the parking brake assembly behind the hub.

+1 with Drew

Common issues with hubcentric spacers is that they won’t sit flat on the rotor hat as the depth of the hub lip varies from car to car, and usually it is greater than the chamfer or shoulder in the spacer allows.

a Perfect fit should be like this :

If you must speak to these guys : http://www.wheelspacers.uk.com/inde...chnung=E-Klasse incl. Kombi u. Cabrio&typ=124

They are the UK suppliers for SCC Germany .

Cheers guys - will get some pics up. In the meantime can someone tell me the exact type of spacers I need? I think 12mm is right given the ET44 upfront, hopefully they'll clear the front brakes and suspension strut.

Just need to know which spacers to buy which WILL fit the 500E hub...

Bill

A 12mm spacer should provide adequate clearance for an 8j et44 wheel over stock brakes and will be very close to the OEM specs. I recommend following the link Bing provided. Make sure to inquire about the issue being discussed. Also try trackplus.com (H&R) Maybe another member can verify a brand of spacer in 12mm that will work. Post a picture of the inside mounting surface of the wheel you are wanting to mount as well, if possible

drew

Man, I hate talking about spacers coz it's such a "I don't agree with them, mixed opinion, not so bad" modification here ! Personally not a fan, but (reluctantly) I had to fit 'em once caused I screwed up on a purchase :o.

Bill, measure the hub lip if you can and talk to the guys in that link I posted. They are very helpful and will verify fitment i.e if the chamfer in the spacer is deep enough.

You also need to think about tyre size as this can cause rubbing against the struts

9J front and 10J rears, 17", ET 44.

The ideal tyre width for the rims you've bought as above:

front 255/45
rear 275/40

You could go one size less , 245 and 265 , but not ideal. Use a tyre calculator and be within 2% give or take to be within tolerance. Your CC won't like it otherwise.

Apologies, I failed to recall your new wheels are 9 and 10 inch. You should still be ok in front with 12mm. You may have to go back to 16-20mm in the rear. Try a test fitment of your current 12mm on the rear if you haven't already.

drew

Cheers gents.

Bing - that's really helpful. I will mount all 4 alloys with 255/45 and then replace the rear boots with 275/40's once they are mounted as I don't want to spend the extra £££ until they're mounted and correct. I was under the illusion the rears will not need spacers but I will check, they certainly don't stick out as much but you never know. I will get the measurements of the front alloy itself and the 12mm spacer I have and post back on here so I can find the right set of spacers for the car.

Truth be told I'd rather not use spacers myself mate but I need them to clear the brakes and the strut with these rims and they can't be mounted without them.

Been ill recently so looking through some of the pics I've taken recently, got a few small jobs done:

- replaced all the fuses as they looked corroded/old - good thing to check when buying an old car
- replaced the 500E boot badge (old one wasn't looking smart)
- fit V8 badges on the wings
- replace drivers side wing mirror glass (old one was magnified)

Few cheeky pics of the engine bay and interior too  Noted the number plate covers look old so will be replaced and I may fit LED bulbs (too chav-tastic?!). As noted earlier the washer bottle and one of the pumps are in poor state when I took it out so will be replaced once the parts come through from MB. I will also replace the serpentine belt (but it actually looks ok) and maybe the shock mounts as they are cracked. Ideally I want new shocks and a suspension bush refresh but this will have to wait a few months as I've spent quite a bit of $$$ on the old beasty recently.

The washer pumps look ok to me... pic below. Relocate that coolant aeration hose below the fender line so the hood doesn't pinch it.

Cheers. Looking at the hoses to my washer bottle the hoses to the pumps themselves look all wrong on mine.

Any idea how they should be wired? My headlamp washers don't work and the issue is in the wiring. I also forgot to buy the seals for where the pumps seat in and the connector part at the top of the washer bottle - doh! MB are hopeless in telling you what parts you need. I really need access to EPC system - is anyone kind enough to share access with me?

B

Well, looking at your photo the right pump should be connected to a hose which possibly is for headlamps. Can't remember which pump connects to but definitely both should be attached to a hose.

Yes you need grommets between pumps and tank .

Cheers, thought so when looking at the pic above from that red e500. Will order them up next time i'm in MB, will have to locate the hose for the headlights so I can get them wired up. They actually work fine just no washer.

Nothing exciting but prop donut bought and brass fuses arrived...

Waiting for the brake discs and a few other bits from MB - hopefully fit them over the Easter weekend if they come through. I'm also hoping to get all 4 arches deep cleaned - more photos to come :agree:

Right been suffering from another misfire!!!

Cut a long story short I thought it'd be an issue with the dist caps. Turns out I was right! Removed the Beru ones and they look damaged already!!! Hardly lasted a month or so. Put the old (worn out looking) Bosch back in and cleaned them up. Car runs absolutely perfectly. Spent an hour with it and it's running nice. Kick down is nice and hard. My recommendation is to use Bosch or MB....

Anyways, off to kick ECP's ass over selling me these caps!!!

Can you please post a photo of the Beru caps?

Where does one get those speakers?

I bought them from Extreme Audio in Germany through Amazon. Links for the speakers are here:

http://www.extremeaudio.de/de/rainb...m-coaxial-set-fur-mercedes-e-klasse-w124.html

Hope this helps. I have fitted the fronts and they fit fine (had to cut some of the insulation back). Not fitted the rears yet but hope to over the next few days.

FWIW... I would not replace the rear speakers. The factory rears are very good. The Rainbows have a smaller woofer (less bass) and will add a third tweeter on each side which will not necessarily help anything. Rainbows are nice to brighten up the front though.

The Rainbow rear speakers are the same as the fronts, but the rear kit includes an adapter to fit the smaller driver in the larger hole. They are a good upgrade for early 124's with the small rear speakers and no rear tweeters. The 124 models with 'sound system', which includes all E500E's, really do not need any help in the rear. YMMV, etc. There is additional discussion on this topic elsewhere on the forum.

I bought a set in 2005 for the front from Alumapro, Inc. 11936 Oak Creek Parkway, Huntley, Illinois 60142 phone 224 569 3650

Well worth the effort. Looks like I paid $137.50

Have to replace the speakers they're cracking. I think the rainbow ones would be better than the MB ones surely tech has come a long way since 1992?!

One of my rears failed too... I replaced it with a good used one. Speaker technology has improved since then, but not drastically. Rear fill is not as critical compared to the front soundstage. I think new ones may be NLA, so your only option would be used.

Factory rears have a 140mm driver (not 120mm) and are 2 ohm, not 4 ohm. Not easy to find a 'correct' replacement. Additional photos are at this link.

Hi all - not updated this for a while but progress has been made. Getting to know the car / enjoy it more and certainly enjoying it. It could handle much better but I think replacement of the front shocks and all the bushes underneath can help. Traction control sometimes hinders experience but the ASR defeat from Martin will help this. Work completed is the following plus a few small bits and pieces I've probably forgotten about now:

- discs and pads replaced (MB)
- washer bottle and all accessories
- 245/45 and 265/40 bridgestones fitted
- number plates replaced
- LED plate bulbs added
- aux fan resistor replaced
- coolant reservoir replaced and accessories
- coolant upper hose replaced
- SLS reservoir replaced and fluid topped up
- number plate lenses replaced
- fan belt replaced
- fan belt tensioner replaced
- coolant sender level replaced
- headlamp washer system fixed (connector replaced)
- engine mounts replaced
- gearbox mount replaced
- shock top mounts replaced
- deerfield / wrx braided hoses fitted all around
- wiper mechanism replaced
- oil and filter changes x2
- passenger side rocker sealed due to leak (new gaskets now arrived from MB)
- distributor cap covers replaced x2
- dipstick replaced
- side repeaters replaced

I also bought a Lorinser boot spoiler with brake light that had been sitting in someones garage for the last 20 years. It'll be fitted once the car goes in for paint next year.

Lovely update.Love all the stuff youve done to the car.
in the progress myself to swap out quite a few of the plastic bits in the engine bay.

cheers from norway :)

well deserved mate :)

and thank you to you too...for following my thread too :)
Got some more updates comin up pretty soon :)

Hello all - not much has happened with the car - it is back on the original 8 hole alloys now as the Lorinser rims had a terrible shimmy from the rear. I'm not a fan of using massive 22mm spacers so I am in the process of buying a set of AMG/OZ 17" staggered alloys for it which should really set the car off nicely.

I am off to Dubai in a few days for the next 6 months at least for work so if any owners are out there it'd be good to meet! My plans going forward are as follows (I have also updated my first post for reference).

Cosmetic

- Split and refurbish the AMG's with polished lips
- Full repaint (inc insides of door shuts, all panels off car) along with new rear screen, mirror boots, sunroof seal, boot seal, fog light lenses, aerial grommets, window trims, door chromes, roof trims and a repaint of the grill, door handles, windscreen wiper arm and headlight wipers in satin black to make them "pop".
- HID kit fitted for the headlamps and fog lights (4300k? - not sure what to go with at the moment) - lights are like candlelight compared to my M3 xenons.

Mechanical

- H&R springs fitted all around (suspension way too soft and high atm)
- Front and rear shocks replaced (probably Bilstein or Koni)
- ITG airbox filters fitted (£120 for the pair)
- Fuel pumps replaced (Bosch - about £180 for the pair)
- ASR defeat kit wired and fitted
- Replace flex disc (I have one already, may buy another and replace the pair but they look healthy from looking underneath tbh)
- Entire front and rear suspension bushes and arms replaced (£££!)
- Idler arm bushing replaced (about £100 for the kit)
- Brake fluid flush and full bleed, hoses adjusted (£150 if done properly)
- Prop boot bearing replaced
- Laser wheel alignment once all the suspension work is done

This year has also been quite focused on the mechanical side of things to be honest to get her running properly so it's time to get cracking with the cosmetic side of things so I can actually bring the car to shows and enjoy the cleaning and maintenance side of things. I've poured tonnes into her so far and she looks no where as good as she should.

I think the year after I could see myself moving onto the interior, with the following planned.

- Recaro black leather seats fitted with MB fridge (due to lack of armrest)
- Auto dimming mirror wired in
- Dual electric mirrors (my drivers side is currently manual)
- Replace all 4 door entry sills (£200 from MB)
- Replace steering wheel with Victor/similar - thicker rim for better driving experience
- MB sport pedals fitted (always wanted these)
- Headliner and both A pillars retrimmed in black alcantera (£750 ish)
- Replace speaker wiring throughout and finally fit the rear speakers
- Fire extinguisher fitted to drivers seat

I would also be on the lookout for a big brake kit or silver arrow brake calipers. The 500E braking system is far from adequate, especially apparent driving at high speeds. I feel I need a big brake kit as the silver arrow kit probably wouldn't "feel" as good at the lower speeds. I have seen a few solutions online but they're silly money so hoping for a used set to come up or if that fails, get a set off another car which I can adapt for the 500E (AP racing, K sport, something like that, serious stopping power).

Lastly I will move onto the exhaust. My plan is to retain the Lorinser backbox as it is in keeping with the Lorinser theme but replace the cats with dual sport cats and then two pipes straight through to the backbox. Should sound pretty mean after that 2.gif I will need to have it setup by a specialist though and Acid at MSL suggested Imran at TorqueFlow.

I have collected a few bits for this project along the way but always on the lookout for parts to hold onto. If you have anything outlined above feel free to give me a shout 1.gif

Cheers

Bill
