Performance chip installation problem

Hi,

I wanted to try out a Performance chip, so I the opened the Fuel Injection ECU, but was not able to pull the plastic cover off :-(

The plastic clip around my chip looks different than the pictures from the installation guide and other pictures I found on the internet, and my print is covered in some kind of soft sealing wax.

I believe that '92 was the first year Mercedes put a fuel injector ECU was in? Maybe they didn’t
wanted people to mess with the chip? Because the it seems like the later versions have a plastic clips that can easily be removed.
Any comments or confirmation?

Added two pictures of my box.

The earlier LH modules have that plastic cover over the chip, and yes it's a pain to remove. It will come off but please be careful when removing. Also be VERY careful when removing the stock chip, pry up at each end just slightly, back & forth, until it's free of the socket. Note which way the chip is positioned (the notch has to be in the correct position).

That said... don't expect any power gains from your "performance" chip. It may remove the top speed limiter and may increase the RPM limit, but it won't boost power, at all. Hopefully the chip you bought was specifically for the 1992 models. If it's a 93-up chip, you'll lose a big chunk of power... BT, DT...

:seesaw:

Wasn't it said that those eBay performance chips "activate" the WOT-enrichment on 93-up modules?
That has been mentioned in the past but I have not yet had time to prove this true or false. There's a lot of claims on the interwebs but until I verify it on my own car, it's all speculation...

I mentioned this earlier IIRC, a guy with a E420 in German Forums (the same person which with a scanner confirmed the injection times up to 17ms) bought such a "performance chip" from Ebay and he said with Live-Data testing after installation, the closed-loop at WOT/V-Max was gone (note that at this point i wasn't even sure that open-loop is in fact WOT-enrichment).
However he also said there was ZERO noticeable Performance gain (he did't verify it at a dyno though).

Another german E420 guy which installed a early 400E Module (with WOT) bought from US Ebay, did same as you and found almost a total of 300HP at the crank on the Dyno and he said the performance-boost was clearly noticeable with his Butt-Dyno.

400Eric will be happy to know that Germans also have butt dynos, and it's not merely the domain of Americans.....

I got the 1992 chip.
I don't expect power gain from the performance chip (have readed the Performance Chip thread in the forum), but I might be surprised :tears_of_joy:
I'm also informed that a Performance Chip + Green filters could add some more response.

I might give the LH module another try, or see if I can get my hands on a later version.
Will a later versions with a '92 chip work in a '92 500E?

No, you want to put the '92 chip in your '92 module. Don't mess with later versions. Just pry that cover off carefully. All the early LH modules have that same plastic cover. Squeeze the narrow ends together a bit and it will help the wide ends pop free.

Ok, I got an extra LH modules for backup - so I can continue my chip installation :)

My backup has the following part number: 014 545 65 32 and was taken from a 500E from 11/92.
I checked EPC to compare it with my old one 012 545 62 32 and they link to the same page (even though the new one is not listed) with many versions.

Is the any way to check WOT enrichment on my backup 014 545 65 32 ?

1993 model years do not have WOT enrichment. The 1993 model year cars were built starting in summer of 1992, so if the car was produced in the second half of calendar year 1992, it will be a 1993 model year, and will not have WOT enrichment. A 500E built in 11/92 is actually a 1993 model year, at least based on USA standards. Model years are a bizarre subject on Euro models, I've never been able to figure out how the model year was determined for Euro cars. Model year is encoded into the VI for USA models, so it's not an issue for us in the 'States.

The Euro EPC gives a VIN break, as of chassis # B840527 the WOT enrichment was eliminated.
