Good morning all! I owe the forum a few minutes to start a new OWNER'S THREAD since I finally have time to revive my 93 500E. She is spent boys and girls, but here we go! First question: What is this plug? Is it repairable or a replacement item? Which way should it be oriented? As I dropped my trans pan yesterday, it came out before I could even get eyes on it! That might explain a code or two...

That is the transmission overload protection switch, it sends a signal to the EZL at high RPM to retard ignition slightly during WOT upshifts. If the switch is defective it can leak ATF, cause a slight hesitation at WOT shifts, and should store a fault code on the EZL.

The rubber boot is not sold separately by MB but an aftermarket supplier in Europe sells the boot for a crazy price. The connection is not keyed/polarized, it doesn't matter which way the 2 pins connect. If the wires broke off they can be re-soldered. It's part of the wiring harness for the transmission, which is NLA.

The overload protection switch is a source for external transmission fluid leaks. Replacing mine cured a persistent, but fairly small, transmission fluid leak that I had for some years.

See here for more information on replacement:
