I used to think the 928 was ugly but for some reason lately I'm kind of liking them. I'm wondering what is the consensus on this model? I kind of the like the 1990's models and especially the GTS model. Should I just keep walking or is the car with a future?
I have one, if you think a 107 or 126 is a nice drive, then the 928 will be a delight. It's a GT car more then an out and out sports car but it's still quite light and the 32v S4 motors make over 300hp. It's not that fast by today's standards but it was a super car in its day and can still be hustled really quickly.
I used to own a 84 Euro S. It was the most powerful single cam model they made. I loved the car, but it was death by a million cuts in the time I owned it. The later models can be found super cheap for what they are. The cars sound dynamite with a rear muffler delete. They are very similar to the W124 in that you buy the models that have the most maintenance records. Many porsche mechanics know little of these models as well.
I used to have a 1990 S4 and had a great time, though a busted torque tube and malfunctioning chip took away from some of the fun. I have say, however, as much as I liked it, I think my CLK55 cab with 362 hp is a superior GT for my purpose.

I love 928's and it is starting to piss me off that in the last year or two people are starting to say nice things about them. I can feel yet another bucket list car for me, previously unloved by the masses, beginning it's drift out of my financial reach if it was ever near enough to begin with...
928 is one of my favorite cars. My dream garage would be 500E, W124 cabrio, 928 and BMW E24 M6. Maybe throw in a Ferrari 328 for good measure.
I have heard some say that the 928's reputation for crazy maintenance bills is overstated. But I don't have any personal experience with one so maybe I am just hearing what I want to hear about them.
I'm definitely a 928 fan. Great cars, way ahead of their time. Very solid and secure feeling. From a styling perspective, the '87 and newer cars could almost pass for current models. My favorite is the '89 to '91 GT, a bit more power then the S4 and more raw and edgy then the later GTS. I'd love to add one to the stable some day.
I'm a 911 guy and definitely a Porsche fan. Always loved the 928s too, but never owned one. The later cars are definitely getting pricey.
The issue with buying one today is that they got so cheap, and fell into the hands of people who wanted to run it cheaply. And they are very complex machines. Early electronics etc, hey this is sounding familiar!
Just buy one well sorted with a good history like always. No such thing as a cheap Porsche.
There's a guy in N Texas that specializes in these cars. I stopped by his house to get parts when I was doing an intake refresh. He has an acre lot with a big wooden fence around it and behind it, about 30 928's. If prices are going up, it's because he's creating a bubble.
My best friend had this car, the GTS. Very low miles but he bought it to drive it. We would exchange cars just so that we could see how the car being "driven" looked like from the exterior. A 928 GTS at speeds with a muffler delete coasting down the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful site to see, so is the 500.
