Powersteering pump

Hi!

I have finally found the motivation to start whit the 500e that a bought 2 years ago.

The power steeringpump and its bracket hade come loose, due to a bad repair jobb in its previous life.
Two of three bolts where of so I hade to take a drill to get them out.

Now I have come to the point where I can start to reasamble everything.

But there is some questions.

1, should I attach the tandempump to the bracket that also holds the reservoir and put it back like a unit, or would it be easier if I start with the bracket and then assamble the pump?

2, look at the small bracket in the pictures that holds the vacuum line and cables, where should I a put that!?
Is it the lower bult to the steeringpumpbracket that it suppose to hold that one to?DSC_3214.JPGDSC_3213.JPG

I would install the pump to the bracket and then install the bracket. If the bracket is off, it is really easy to install the short hose between the reservoir and pump without having to remove the reservoir. If you haven't done a reseal on the pump, I would do that before installing it on the car. It just makes it that much easier.

The problem I had with a pump bracket years ago was that there are two bolts that hold the bracket on from behind (the threads face forward) and it is virtually impossible to get to at least one of the bolts without removing the left exhaust manifold. I think there is also a ground wire that attaches to the bracket as well. Maybe the prior owner or prior mechanic didn't even install these bolts. I took pictures when I did it, but it has been so long (circa 2007) that I don't have them anymore. Although, I think GSXR has some of the pictures I took of the bracket and the two mounting holes where the bolts go in from behind on his website, IIRC.

They have put those bults in but they have turn them so hard so they where of, the only bult holding the whole powersteering unit was the upper left one next to the ABS unit.

I know it's a PITA job to put the pump on the bracket when it's in the car but if it's easier to mount the bracket properly with out the TP, then I think it's worth trying.

The groundwire has its own screw at the bottom of the bracket and when using the e420 as a reference it goes to the ground point at the ABS unit
That wasn't attached there when I started so I believe that the previous guy's working on the car has been taking short cuts due to lack of experience and interest.

@Swe500E -- I believe the conventional wisdom from MANY people here on the forum, is what @emerydc8 says, and that is to remove the pump+bracket as a single unit, and not to remove the pump from the bracket first.

When I did this job, back in 2013, I was able to only remove the pump. I did the best job I could to describe and detail the process in this post here: HOW-TO: Removing and re-sealing ZF tandem pump (SLS and power steering)

Also check the posts immediately before and after this post for more information.

Also here: HOW-TO: Removing and re-sealing ZF tandem pump (SLS and power steering)

The replacement of the pump is here: HOW-TO: Removing and re-sealing ZF tandem pump (SLS and power steering)

And the final/finale of the job: HOW-TO: Removing and re-sealing ZF tandem pump (SLS and power steering)

So I think it up to you. I did not find this to be impossible, but others have found that removing the pump itself has been near-impossible. I think in this situation you have to use your own judgement.....

Thanks for the links, I will see how I solve this problem, I'm going to make a trip to the local hardware store to get some tools that i think can be helpful.

Any ideas for the small bracket that holds the cables underneath the ps unit and over the AC compressor?

Opps, I didn't think of that section of the forum at all.

But anyway the problem is solved now!
The pump is now in the car and it was about 45 minutes of work to get it in place.

I grabbed a extentioner from the hardware store and I don't think that I had solved it with out that one.

I started to mount the pump on the bracket, than attached the oilpipe.

I then put the two M8 in place from behind with the pump hanging out

I then gently put the pump unit in place and put the screw in at the front but not all the way, then the M8 next to the ABS unit.

Then it was time to get under the car and with help of the above mentioned extentioner the second M8 was put in place.
Up again to make sure that everything was alright and then tighten the two screws from above and at last, under the car to tight the lower/inner M8DSC_3218.JPGDSC_3223.JPG

Good job! Those were really tough bolts for me to get to. In the future when you want to reseal the pump, there are only six bolts on the front that hold the front of the pump housing, so it's pretty easy to re-seal.

A couple of things here:

I did a search for "power steering" and "power steering pump" but an error came up. I am guessing that is because in this thread the words are combined, "powersteering"?

Any who- the latter M119 received an upgraded pump. I have just begun my search but has anyone tried or have knowledge on using the upgraded pump?

Nope. The forum search is borked again. Until it's fixed, use Google. "power steering pump site:500eboard.co" :

https://www.google.com/search?q=power+steering+pump+site:500eboard.co

Also search for "tandem pump", since it's technically a power steering and SLS pump combined into one unit.

I'm not aware of any pump upgrades. AFAIK the pump was the same throughout production, although some later (.98x engines) used a modified design with plastic reservoir (i.e., the 119.985 engine on the 1997 E420).

THANK YOU ALL!

That is what I am referring to- the res difference. I "read" that it was an improvement over the earlier design (which is the same design that is all of 9 MBs '72-'95 I own). Is there an advantage to this type of res over the metal res?
Mine is in dire need of a reseal and just wanting to know would it be better off or is just the same but different?

I’m not sure about the differences and compatibility etc. but there is a rear to front fixing which is a bit of a swine to access without an inspection pit or a lift.

I have a lift. (presently my '82 500SE is on it)
But this rear to front, do you mean looking at it from, say, around the tie rods looking back and up at the pump?

From memory it’s the only fixing which is inserted from the rear but I will double check when I have access to my laptop.
