Questions on A/C, shift linkage, and ASR

I just purchased the 500E, and I have questions:
1. Is it possible to disconnect the A/C from going off when the accelerator is floored? It's Texas here.

2. The shift linkage is gimpy trying to select D. Have to go to 3 then to D to get Drive engaged. Can the linkage be adjusted? Maybe bushings?

3. The auto stability (ASR ?) has been turned off and ASR light always comes on. The check engine is also on. Are these connected or is the CEL on for another reason?

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. I think the ac is already set to automatically turn off under heavy acceleration.

As for the sloppy linkage, there are two white plastic bushings for the shift linkage that usually wear out. They are inexpensive and the one in front is easier to change than the rear. Actually, if you have the special tool, they are both easy to change. Most of us don't have the tool so we just fight with it for 30 minutes to get the new bushing in. Here is a great post on shift linkage bushings.

As for the ASR and CEL, you need to build the home brew LED tester at the bottom of this link http://www.k6jrf.com/MB_X11.html and pull the codes from all the modules at the 38-pin connector. Clear them out and then deal with the ones that return. Otherwise, you will just be guessing as to why the ASR light or CEL is on.

Hi and welcome! Regarding the warning lights, Jon hit the nail on its head. The first thing to do with these cars when something goes wrong or weird: "pull codes". If you don't want to do this yourself (though I have the feeling from your start post you do intend to do so ;) ) be sure to find a proper shop where they know what they're doing.

Thank you both! Great info.

Re: A/C, I was hoping to have a disconnect from the throttle so A/C is on all the time.

Ditto what was posted above about codes for diagnosing the ASR issue.

Unless you drive around at 100% throttle all the time, don't worry about the A/C compressor turning off. There's nowhere in the USA where you can use full throttle for more than 20-30 seconds without going to jail thanks to some overzealous dimwit with a badge. Another option is to not engage the kickdown switch, I don't think the A/C compressor will disengage unless the kickdown is triggered. Also, remember that the compressor does not run continuously anyway... it cycles based on evaporator temps.
