Replacement headlight wiper blade for my 1992 500E Euro

Hi All:
Further to my recent restoration efforts - removing a tonne of rust in rocker pannels, wheel wells, battery box and elsewhere, replacing all the sub-frame and suspension bushings, load leveling shock adsorbers, sagging head liner, timing chain and guides, headlight adjustment pods, misc electrical gremlins, etc. I thought it would be a god idea to complete the makeover by replacing the worn out headlight wipers.

I bought what I though to be replacement blades for my headlight wipers (Part # 124 820 04 45) only to find that they are much shorter and have a different connector that the original as show in the picture below (top - New part in the bag; middle - New out of the bag; bottom - the old blade)Wiper blade 1.jpg

In addition to not being the same size, the new replacement has a different attachment mechanism as per below (top - new; bottom - old blade.

Does anyone know the correct part number for the replacement wiper blade?

Many thanks in advance!

Joe

So you have a U.S. model 500E with the original headlights or you have a 92 with the European headlights? These require different wiper arms and blades, so would be good to know the specifics so you can get the right info. I believe the PN for the Euro lights is 124 820 02 45 67. The PN for the 500e US blades is 124 820 04 45 7129

I did the mod to Euro headlights and wipers and remember that getting new blades and arms was a real pain

I believe the facelift or 500E euro arms are no longer available. I do think that the W140 arms are the same. Can someone confirm this? As for the actual wiper blades/inserts, I and others have made them from windshield inserts by cutting them to length.
As tim said, let us know what type lights you have.

Drew, the W140 headlight wiper blades are not the same as the W124 Euro/facelift. I don't think they can be made to work... photos attached.

A cunning plan indeed! Had the same idea back then but alas, it doesn’t fit, just like Dave said. I found that out the hard way, after I purchased w140 units only to discover that it doesn’t work despite the seller‘s multiple assurances it would 🙄

AFAIK, the only option we have at the moment is to re-use the old/existing plastic blade, and cut a longer refill strip down to size, and somehow replace the worn-out rubber piece. But it also has to be retained somehow, the originals have a "pocket" in the rubber where the blade grips it. I need to get some photos of this. And Gerry "El Guapo" needs to do one of his in-famous HOW-TOS!

I have about 5 - 6 pairs of good used spare euro w124 headlamp wiper motors and arms in my hoard.
:wootrock:

Maybe one day ill make one or two sets available on the board if someone is really in need but not any time soon.

Yes for a simple rubber replacement just cut down a wiper refill.

Thanks Tim. I'll see if I can find these.
The car is a Euro model with original Euro headlights (have the vacuum pods for adjustment). The picture shows the difference in length.

All the best,

Joe

Thanks GSXR.

I will try this as a last resort.

Thanks Twilling! These look to be the correct ones. The length and fastening mechanism looks right. I'll see if I can buy a set on the internet!

All the best,

Joe

Those are the correct ones, but I haven't been able to find them anywhere else... if you do, let us know!

Yeah... these are all the problems I was running into when I was going to do that swap. “To hell with it” was my response. MB just needs to come out with a kit — lights, lenses, arms, motors, filler panels, bulbs, all in one, charge $1500 a side and call it a day. Then you’ll know what you’re dealing with from scratch and you can see if it’s worth it. In my case the time and aggravation are worth more.

Found it!! After surfing the web with the Bosch number rather than the MB part number I found a local source at a much lower cost.

Joe

Joe, nice find! Please let us know if you receive the correct items at that price...

Used is awesome, it’s NOS when it gets really tricky for these. It’s just silly how much w124 stuff is NLA.....

BAD NEWS

Got the following email today. It was too good to be true................

Hello Joseph,
The Bosch 3398113068 you had ordered is not in stock in Canada currently.
We may be able to provide an alternate in another brand, we would just need to confirm the vehicle application first.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and look forward to hearing from you.

I was afraid of that. Figured I'd wait for cofirmation before I ordered a couple pairs.

Still 3 left in Germany of the NOS stash on eBay...

Funny thing about all this is, I have a friend at Magneti Marelli and knowing how much suppliers like aftermarket service and replacement parts business (higher margins), I’ve been tempted to make a call. This is small market high margin pattern parts business for them, should be simple (the problem being the word “should”). But they can charge whatever they want... I think my clear corners are Magneti, which made me think about it years ago.

Aaah, but admit it maw, it’s a VERY close call! 😉

Agree with you that the wild goose part chase is an idiotically and needlessly painful process. It is a very desirable upgrade to the first gen U.S. cars though.....

It was very close. I had already sourced the assemblies. But in the end I decided I liked the old school look better, given the effort involved. It was the whole finding and painting of filler panels that took me over, in addition to everything else. It’s sort of like people who keep the factory stereos. I did the full monty upgrade on a ‘92 car, which to some makes absolutely no sense. But it was all readily available. Had I needed to buy new dash wood...

I think the sale is for just the ends of the wiper assembly. That's what the seller is showing in the pics.

Reproductions available now from Germany, €90/pair, plus S&H.

"The wiper blades with the OE number Mercedes-Benz / Bosch / SWF A1248200245 are reproduced by us in the highest possible quality and are of the same quality as the original. "

I think the only hope is to find NOS on a shelf somewhere, or use reproductions.

If you have a pair of wiper blades with worn-out rubber inserts, you can use other Bosch refills cut down to fit. Jimbo mentioned this in a different thread, I tried it last year and it worked great.

I am offered a few sets of NOS Bosch 3 398 113 091. Would members be interested in a group buy?

Are the Bosch 3 398 113 091 correct for the 124 Euro/facelift wipers? I am seeing Bosch 3-398-113-068 as the confirmed/correct Bosch part number. I don't know if one supercedes to the other or something, but some internet sources seem to indicate they may be interchangeable.

I have a spare set so I probably don't need another, but as Tim said, it will depend on the price point.

Being able to refill the blades is a huge help, as noted here.

I agree if you have the frames and metal strips in good shape just replace the rubber insert, it works great.

In all other cases you will need the new frames and metal supports = New wipers.
