Sauber C11 built video

I love the sound of these cars, it isn't screaming like others of this era but you really can hear that this dark growling thing has brute power. Another good sound check is as of min 20 onwards.

Oh I just remembered that I had some photos in an old album.... that's me, sitting in the junior team c11. It was somewhen in '91

The M119 and its sound was the other reason I wanted an 036. As much as I enjoyed the sound with the factory exhaust, it took a more free flowing exhaust to really let that glorious V8 growl out. I spent a good amount on a slamming ICE system (done prior to having my cat-back exhaust built and then updating the factory cats to the HJS sport cats) and never found myself spending time utilizing it to its fullest. I just have music quietly playing while I indulge myself in the M119 symphony.

I gotta find a way to make our M119's sound like that.
It must all be in the (lack of an) exhaust?

I was going to post something earlier but @emerydc8 got in before me regarding the flywheel (or lack of one) causing the dying idle without revs.

Do we know what other significant non-turbo modifications the Sauber / MB M119 engine has over a "standard" M119.960?

I did look earlier today and couldn't find any published literature on the M119 engine and how the racing derivatives are comprised. It would make a good topic for a book...

I know the Sauber has dual electronic injectors per cylinder (likely because a single injector could not flow enough fuel) along with a full Bosch Motorsports electronic fuel / ignition management. I would assume these also have hotter camshafts, but I doubt any details were ever published.

The fast-revving may be due to lightened internals and/or lower mass flywheel (vs our heavy torque converters).

:detective:

They have quite some features like iron-measuring for knock control, external mounted (in the inner v) piston cooling squirters protruding through the block, but also have a flywheel and idle more or less. I understood that some of the private owned and factory driven cars got meanwhile new ecu's.

Also a book about the C9 is or was available:

Another good book focused on the goal to win LeMans with these cars also covers the prototypes and advancements of the C9.

Mercedes Magic, by Ken Wells. 127 pages with great photos including race stats.
Thanks, I managed to buy this for £7.50 delivered which seems a bargain.

@Rouven036 I will keep a look out for your recommendation too - that is quite a bit more expensive from what I can see currently for sale.

Group C: How did the Sauber C9 get its ferocious sound?

In my opinion, the Sauber C9s and C11s make one of the most spectacular noises ever to come out of a V8. Even among the crazy soundtrack of a Group C race, they were unmistakable.
I know Mercedes AMG is known for this type of exhaust note, but aside from the fancy acoustical engineering in their modern road cars, what gives these M117 and M119 engines such a distinctive, throaty sound. (Aside from the sounds from the straight cut gearbox and turbos of course).
Prime example:
Header length? Exhaust diameter?
