Sunroof stuck

Well, was out on an evening trip and with the sunroof completely open, when I get home, I close the hatch, and tilt up at the back when I set it in the garage so it airs a little. What happens… it slams a little, and the door is skewed, ie one side up, the other down .., Anyone know how to get this in order? The engine works, but does not want / can force it down .. How to do/repair it, I don’t want to damage anything

If one side lifts and the other does not, there's a good chance one of the lift arms is broken or damaged. You'll need to try and inspect with a flashlight and see if you can tell what happened. Be careful when moving the roof in either direction.

Bad news is, to repair this, you need to first remove the sunroof trim panel inside, which requires opening the sunroof (sliding back). If the roof won't open, that makes things much more difficult.

I think @JC220 had posted a detailed writeup on sunroof repair, search the forum...

That is probably a snapped lift arm unfortunately.

With an assistant operating the switch and you pressing it you should be able to get it to settle back in eventually.

Failing that you may park it in a garage and get ready for taking it apart to service and repair now. Trouble is when things snap like that it can be very difficult to get all fasteners undone

If it does turn out to be a broken/snapped lift arm, replace BOTH with new ones. They will come with all new felt sliding pads. After cleaning the tracks in the roof and re-assembling, it will glide open & closed like new again. EDIT: As noted below, ONLY buy Genuine Mercedes parts for sunroof repair - they are expensive, but worth it.

+1

Worth noting get genuine MB parts only not ebay knock offs.

And the genuine arms will come complete with all felt pads no need to order them too.

Hi everyone,
I read all the information JC220 wrote in the thread and it’s very helpful
I get out to the garage, and of course, the right lift arm is in peace’s. 2 or 3 I’ll think..
I will go to the mb dealer, and se if I can order the parts.
I get some pictures also 🙄
Nr on right lift arm will be: 124780647

You need part numbers 124-780-05-12 (left) and 124-780-06-12 (right). Ignore the numbers cast on the part itself. Components of the sub-assembly are not sold separately, except for the felt sliders.

The complete lift arms are $250 USD each in USA list price, or $175-$190 from discount dealers. Not sure what the cost will be in Sweden. Replace BOTH sides... or you'll be repeating the job.

Those part numbers appear to be the same.

Perhaps you mean 124 780 05 12 (left) and 124 780 06 12 (right) ?

Yes typically Europe MB parts prices are much higher than USA. (Probably because USA benefits from a variety of competing online MB parts discounters)

Bottom line is the vendor decides their profit margins and where that local competition is not there they add whatever they want on top! My dealer is expensive too but I do get a small discount as I buy so many parts. Getting to know the parts guys helps!

I have utilised good used genuine MB sunroof arms with success like in the How-To. Requires the new felts but will save you $$$ overall.

Perhaps you can pay someone here to buy them and send them to you, at the US-prices....
Or, contact the MB Classic Center in Irvine, CA for a quote. They will ship internationally and the total cost may be lower than buying locally.

I've seen this both ways... sometimes, a part is much cheaper (MSRP) in Europe than USA. 10+ years ago, door mirror boots were about 50% cheaper in Europe than in USA. It's tough to compare unless you know the Euro price is MSRP/list, not "dealer matrix" pricing which is often marked up drastically.

Anyway - for these lift arms, it does appear the price in Europe is roughly €250 plus VAT. Quite a bit more than USA. :scratchchin:

I have done the same. HOWEVER, the cost of the felts is substantial, vs the cost of new USA arms. IIRC new felts are ~50% of the cost of the new assembly which IMO doesn't make sense. Some of the felts can be re-used of course, so on a tight budget, a good used lift arm should be ok with only damaged/missing felts replaced. I've found some used arms have substantial wear at the pivots, it's difficult to tell what is normal vs what is excessive wear, unless you have several used ones to compare. There's also some small rollers with a round plastic "wheel" than can break off, and these are not replaceable, so any used/donor needs to have those inspected prior to installation (ideally, prior to purchase).

:watermelon:

Just note also that international shipping costs from USA are quite high, many vendors including the classic centre can decline to ship in the first instance and normally packages from USA are subject to import duties within Europe.

This means it seldom makes sense to import cheap parts from USA unfortunately 😕

Hi.
I find the parts in eBay, complete left and right. Original Mercedes/ Webasto.
310:- $ and 40:- $ for shipping.
15:-$ import tax in Sweden.
365:- $ total cost.
If I bought in a mb dealer in Sweden, 695:-
695:- -15%= 590:- $
(I be offered-15% of by the dealer in Sweden, with the mb membership as well)
But Big difference anyway!!🤔
I did the order in 24 of Juli,
Get it from the courier to day, the 29.🙌
To day I orders the liquid and the guide in Sweden, hopefully we have the sunroof ready about a week or two.

Cheers /Niklas

Good evening, from Sweden..
The lift arms arrived a few weeks ago,
and after this weekend time was coming🙄
Monday evening I begin with the repair of the sunroof, and Glued the soft filter parts on the new lift arms, (original of course).
Al went well to get all a part,
both lift arms was in very bad shape.
gap in rivets, “lift arms came out in parts”, nearly….
Yesterday evening I get all back in place.
Just the inliner on the hatch was a bit tricky
The description from JC220, was very good to follow, (with the notes from admin).
Thanks for this very helpful description.
Cheers
Niklas
