Transmission noise in Park/Neutral

I have a whirring noise in park and neutral only. Sounds like a remote control truck. The transmission shifts fine in all gears. I did get a rebuilt trans installed and a differential removed and reinstalled by some less than stellar mechanics. Any ideas?

I would suggest the trm. mount, if there are even the slightest Contact, metal to metal i.e. compressed rubber sagging in
the mount you will hear what goes on inside the auto box.

Thanks, so maybe not a foreboding of something catastrophic? I wonder, why it would only be heard in park and neutral?

Because, I have experienced the very same after my, oil/filter/v-modulator, change, I also tried to fit a modified
W140 500 rear mount. I had it, a new part and enabled it to fit via welding the old bracket onto it.
It turned out as the W140 part is a bit wider, it made Contact, audiable mostly at P and R. I will fit a new oem, one.

Just had this delivered yesterday for the E500:

Yeah yeah thats what I am waiting for, if you see where the metal to metal Contact were. I Believe it is at the front of the mount
there is a step of the fixed end of the mount bolted to trm. If rubber mount should fail it will be limited to fall too far and be resting
on the metal i.e. all the weight of the motor/transm. at the back, so, new motor mounts and this one and you will not hear a thing...

I don't hear a thing yet, no records when done but a forum member rode in my car and felt a tremor while stopped at a stop sign - yet I could not detect. I am doing mounts for the engine as well as steering linkage R/R this month (September)

This below part is for a '91-92 W140 S500. This does NOT fit on our E500E's.
A mechanic suggested to me the same thing as 'Taxi Driver' was talking about to modify the part, but as you can see on the below pics that it has a slanted gap and I believe it has two mounting screw holes in the bottom and not three as per this below wrong part.

Eno, thats right, stubborn me trying to modyfie it to a two screw fit from the old mount it may have worked if not, it was too
wide on the outside and therefor came into Contact with the transm. part of the mount, so, this shortcut did not work out
sad as this was a new W140 mount. Why on eart did they have to change the rearmount, why, so MB unlike, I say.

Sure is but why does it have the 140*****# I know first hand when I ordered it. some 90€, thats why I tried the conversion
of the W140 mount but the rest is history....

310.jpg. Just swapped this out. It was worse than it looks and it looks pretty bad. I had to give jack 4 more pumps to get bolts started by hand.

I got that noise to in my previous E420 and now slightly in my 500. How big is this job changing? Where is part located - pictures?

Simple task. Jack up car or ramps/lift. Support trans with jack and 12-14" long 4x4 or 2 2x4 stacked to spread load evenly on pan. Remove 4 17mm bolts and the 2 13mm to remove the trans support just aft of the transmission filter (black). Once exposed, remove center carrier bolt from center of exposed mount, replace as removed.

I'm 95% sure my car has this - glad I searched here first. Frsutratingly, this job was supposedly done to the car in Nov of 2017, about 20k miles ago. They used the correct PN for this and the engine (140 240 0318 and two of 124 240 2617) seemingly, but these shops have at times not done the best work (Winco in this case). My local parts dealer has this for $108, AuthausAZ for $80. Also please don't judge my messy car!

You may or may not need a new mount, but I’m almost certain that noise is a transmission pump whine. Many of them do that but still work perfectly fine. Mine has always done that, even after the mount was replaced.
