vibration through steering wheel ...

hi all.

This is quite difficult to describe. There are vibrations that I can feel through the steering wheel. At up to 50mph on a super smooth road surface it's not really there. on slightly more rough surfaces, it's kind of there. When I'm going forward, it's often not there.

It's at it's most noticeable when I'm going downhill on a trailing throttle, and/or just slowing down.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Ian.

hey there

Have you started to check for play in all front suspension...and rear suspension?
Have you checked the balancing on the wheels?are the wheels TIGHTLY wrenched to the hub?are there any play in the center support bearing on the prop shaft?

I think you should do these checks first..as it is bound to be any of these..even though you cant always really know..and sometimes new "Culprits" appears...(dont know if that made sense in english...abit hard to find the words :)

Thanks - I'll check. It's funny, I test-drove a couple of E500s a while ago, and this was present in one of them. There's no connection to the road surface, it's something else. It's not an obvious thing, but it's definitely there. It's the kind of thing that feels like age. a sort of looseness somewhere, but the rest of the car is tight, and turning and steering seem correct.... something not rubbery enough, a lack of rubberiness or pliancy or bounce somewhere.... hmmm

i see...hm.
I think anyways...i would do a complete check..to check the condition of all rubber bushings....steering damper,wheels...both if they are like i said..tightened proper to the hubs..and balacing

and i would also maybe check how the tires are...they could be uneven..like internally broke...when the inside threads/cords have blown up..kinda

at least its some things to start with...cheers man.

thanks Hierarchi, i'm going to talk to an expert tomorrow or the next day, leave the car with him and see what he does... tyres are brand new... i'll let you know, thanks..
