[Video Series] E60 AMG Stern Garage Project

Note that is not an E60. It is a 1991/1992 500E with AMG 6.0L conversion. They are not the same thing.

Given all the item disconnected (engine mounts, fuel hoses, throttle linkages, oil cooler connections)... I'd be shocked if the 6L engine is still present. Looks to me like someone swiped the AMG motor and dropped in something different. It would take 20 mins to check the stroke via spark plug hole but that probably doesn't make for good YouToobing.

Yes that looks like a junk motor that's been exposed to the elements for quite some time.

Nothing on that engine indicates AMG at present. (Air cleaner etc missing) Wouldn't the block have AMG stamps along the front top area? He said he will remove the engine to check next video but that shouldn't be necessary to tell if it is still the 6L motor.

You are correct, Joe. There should be AMG stamps somewhere, although if it's an early engine, they may be at the rear of the left cylinder head.

The basic engine stamps / number (119 xxx) will tell you original displacement and chassis (124 or 129, assuming the oil pan is original). No need to remove the engine for any of that basic diagnostics. Even if the engine number shows it's a .974 you can still check stroke via spark plug hole (I've personally done this) to determine displacement.

This car is a mess. The engine appears to be from a junker and has literally been dumped into the car with no engine mounts or lines hooked up.

The air cleaner box etc appears to be NLA. The headlamps are pedestrian units. The exhaust has a very poorly executed replacement botch job with the only original part the AMG tips. The battery sheet metal is rotten

As we know all this stuff is NLA and super hard to find / expensive.

He didn't look at the shocks either - I presume even with a conversion it should have E60 suspension or was that optional(?) Eg my 500E has E60 AMG suspension and it is all branded AMG with pre merger HWA part numbers.

Further issues with this car is that the correct EZL is in the trunk but may be dead. The transmission is also a MB replacement(!) So possibly none original to the car.

It seems like it was originally part of the spruce mafia but was repainted.

It's rough as a stucco bathtub 🛀 as our USA members (probably) would say
 
Don't get me wrong I have (and continue to) restored worse but this car needs it all and to pay a garage to do all that it will cost the owner a fortune.

I wonder what sort of $$$$$ this car went for and if the buyer had any real clue as to what to look for.... 🤔 the engine in particular REALLY ought to have been fully verified before the car is in there awaiting restoration.

What is the owner going to do when they tell him the original engine is gone and if he wants a 6L its going to cost him probably about what he paid for the whole car over again.

If I were a betting man I'd put a set of 036 lenses down that the 6L engine is MIA.
 
Agree 110% with all of the above. I'd like to know what the current owner paid. If they bought it for parts-car monies, well, they could part it out and recoup some $$$. Or drop in a good 5L engine and turn it back into a 500E. But attempting to return this to AMG 6.0 status? You gotta really hate money in a big way - right, @Jlaa?

Restoring to 500E status could be cost-prohibitive depending on the tinworm damage and missing/NLA bits. Even the headlights will be tough to find at <€5k. Ditto for a good factory exhaust system, although that's less critical.

BTW, about the AMG EZL unit... nobody seems to know what, if anything, that EZL did differently. It could have had more conservative ignition maps, or more aggressive. I believe only Bosch made the HWA- EZL and we know how long the Bosch EZL's last. :shocking: Thankfully the 6.0 engines make full power with a 5.0 EZL. I have yet to discover any EZL that makes more power than another, at least for 5.0 engines.

Speaking of our Prius driving friend he must be mighty proud to have the only known NOS 036 battery sheetmetal section in existence.

I have heard on the jungle drums he would only accept a 6L motor for it at this point.

I know it's a YouToober thing to drag out the suspense, but 13 minutes of video to pull the head and measure the bore? I'm sure he knew 5 minutes after popping the hood that it wasn't a 6L, but you don't get 75k subscribers and 12k views in 24 hours by announcing up front that it's a stock 5L engine. Everything looked super clean inside, only real mystery was the single plastic oil tube... wth?

Also interesting are the lower mounting points used for the engine stand (see arrow below). These bosses on the block are not normally tapped/threaded from the factory. I assume SG must have threaded/tapped them to mount the engine as pictured:

You could tell from just looking at the intro picture..that is a stock 5L piston.
