I m thinking to install OE phone . I do have 1993 and up arm rest with the phone option. I found some wires in the trunk (big plug and the antenna plug) and telephone wires under the driver seat.

So what do I need to install the OE phone ?

1. Handset which goes to arm rest
2. Also some box in the trunk ? I already bought one but do not know what it goes for ? (attached pic)
3. What else ?

How does the OE phone work ? GSM sim card ? or ? Is it possible to use it nowadays ? Also is it possible to use overseas(if car shipped overseas).

:detective:

This is a nice coincidence, because I want to remove the Factory phone from my 92 - I think? and I have everything, handset, transceiver - MB manual - FWIW its a Rebadged Motorola phone with the Star on it - I can upload pics tomorrow

First of all the bad news - its an AMPS phone - so it would only be decorative, you won't be able to make or receive calls - I did investigate getting a Motorola M930 - the current GSM Car phone they still make (there is a CDMA Version too), but to use it would mean all new wiring and I couldn't integrate the existing in car equipment.

The only thing that I am concerned about and I have not really investigated it yet - is removing the row of phone related buttons by the rear view mirror, and if it will leave any nasty holes. If I can do that we may be able to come to an arrangement.

The thing close to mirror is the hands free buttons , you can leave them .

So there is no way to make this phone work ? I always wanted phone in car with wires . Those hands free phone in newer cars is nothing interesting.

What needs to be done to install the current phone ? Do you some pics ?

I got motorola out of E430 but I m not sure if it is usable in W124 ? (pic attached)

No the phones are 2G digital cellular. The major carriers turned off these networks about 3-4 years ago.

I saw the guy here on board in Europe I guess , so he installed the OE kit in his E60 AMG and it works .

I do need a phone in a car but I want to have a decorative MB phone that still works just fine.

What phone should I look for ?

Looks like you have the old Startac there - which will be either TDMA or CDMA - at the time MBUSA didn't sell GSM Phones.

TDMA - much like AMPS - has gone the way of the Dinosaur

CDMA - used by Verizon Wireless - while Technically if could be activated - in reality it cannot because it doesn't have GPS Location capabilities (aka e911) - Verizon definitely won't activate it - I have heard some MVNO - virtual network operators who resell Verizon Service *might* but its a very big might.

At the end of the day it won't matter - the wiring/pre-wiring is set up for the original car phone - like i have - it won't work with that StarTac :-(

Sounds like I will never have working wire phone in my 500E :-(

Yes, I want to have OE MN, mainly as decorative purpose (show off purpose ) =)

otherwise I do need a phone ....

Probably the oldest phone you can acquire that actually will work would be one from a 99-2000. These used a cradle that held a MB Motorola V60 phone. You can't use the phone, but you can replace it with a MB bluetooth puck, then you can connect your existing phone to the system via Bluetooth. The biggest problem you will encounter is the headunit, you would need to retrofit one of the newer MB units that have phone control (or a Comand unit) so you would need all the wiring etc. Isn't worth it IMO.

Here is what I currently have installed - Apologies if it has been posted/uploaded before.

It powers up and everything but as I mentioned it is an old Style AMPS phone - doubtless installed when new - so it would be 100% decorative - AMPS was switched off in 2008 :-(

I am only removing because I want the console space - others probably know better what I will find when I take out the TORX screws from the hands free buttons - I have a feeling I won't like what I find - :o

Removing the upper push button unit will leave you with two holes in the forward headliner. You can source a used liner and flip down mini-visor from a regular W124.

So what are you going to do with the old phone ?

IF and its still a Big IF - I can remove it and make things look tidy - I am thinking possibly a couple of gray plastic grommets, if indeed the Hands Free thingy just leaves behind 2 holes - I would be willing to sell.

BTW meant to say before - the other cable you see there is connected to the Stereo, its the old style 30pin iPod adapter.

I was having the same idea, but ditched it regarding the vintage phone.
I found one of these on Ebay.de, and they are quite rare. This one is in my cars color and in good condition. I'm gonna put a holder for my current phone on it, and perhaps install a small BT unit inside that perhaps can utilize the speaker.

What is the part number ? Where can I buy one ?

It does not seem to have a part number stamped. Some of these accessory parts lack numbers unfortunately. It has a few holes on the front but nothing to bad. It can be re-lined of course, I noted that the front piece actually is clad in real leather.

I found it on the German Ebay, I have been on the lookout for a grey one for several years. It is not to often they are sold, I don't think they where that common in the first place, and when the world stopped using mounted phones in its cars, the consoles where simply thrown away.

Apparently you found a rare and nice item . I just received the OE phone for W124. So thinking to rebuild internals using the vintage nokia phone . So that I can have OE looking phone but with the GSM internals.

I have one these installed in my red SL. It really finishes the package. :hearts: But I can only call the bat cave and the commissioner.

Thanks Bing, I really appreciate it.
Would it be easier to send it to Poland?
My brother=in-law is coming over and he could carry it.

Kind Regards,

Ron
PS, I have decided it IS Mushroom !

Ready to be shipped for Ron :
Oh no. That is saffron, not mushroom. Sorry Ron. And you were so excited... you just can't hide it...

Ron is very lucky ! I wish I could find the same but grey 278 .......
I don't understand the attraction. It's too far away to be useful as an iPod mount. It intrudes in the passenger legroom area. Nobody has giant corded phones that would go on this holder. It's a neat old dinosaur though. Kinda like the factory phone setup which everyone chucks in the dumpster.

Ladies are fine with that since they have long sexy but thin legs :agree:

It can be used for some vintage Nokia phone with the Nokia OE cradle. That's my goal.

These are available new for the W124, W126 and newer MBs via the German company Kuda. Kuda USA has an active operation, and I get occasional emails from them with discounts and specials. I have a black leather Kuda custom mount in my E500, and it's been great. If you search for Kuda here you'll find my posts about them.

GSXR, perhaps Roma deserves the "Ballin' on a Budget" label, and it's time for you to divest it....

Cheers,
