Want to modify steering lock

OK.... strange. Wouldn't pass MOT inspection here with no steering lock.

And since you need to have the key in order to remove the assembly in the first instance, yes cut the end off and lock won't engage.

I wouldn't do it though!
 
Its a well known failure point and my lock was stuck. generous helpings of graphite and massaged the key in with vibrating electric sander dont wanna be stuck again

The ignition barrel is a well known failure. Not the steering lock.

If you can't get the igntion barrel to turn I dont know what use it is having the steering lock disabled. Unless you intend to hot wire it! Just sayin
 
You can bypass the shift / brake pedal interlock by cutting both cables at the shift lever box.

But I don't know if you can modify the steering lock to bypass the internal lock mechanism. Klink says the steering locks do fail, but it's almost never reported on MB forums that I've seen.

If you have replaced the lock tumbler with new, you should be set for the next 30 years. (Edit: With OE/dealer VIN-coded tumbler, as Joe mentions below!)

94 e420 dont want to be stuck would prefer no steering lock feature
Had a sticking steering lock on a 70's Benz but it looked just like your pic. The answer was to retract the locking pin that you have circled, then push in that little button to the left of it in your pic. This holds in the locking pin. On the car I was working on, there was a narrow recess around the circumference of that little button. I formed a length of paper clip to fit in that recess and when the steering lock was reinserted into the housing while holding that little button and paper clip recessed, this kept the locking pin from extending. Lock disabled.
