Window problems

My driver side window would go down as normal but would not go up. After 15 minutes of pushing the button it finally went up
This morning I replaced the switch. It went down as normal, this time it took 5 minutes to get the window up. It doesn’t act like a bad window motor (slow speed up and down) but I guess that could be the issue. Any other ideas ?

It sounds like the motor is thermally cutting out, but you will probably have to remove the door panel to see what's happening in there. It could be that the motor was cooler in the morning after you replaced the switch and that's why it only took five minutes versus 15 the day before. If you decide to replace the motor make sure you get the little plastic slider that stabilizes the window as it moves up and down. They are often broken.

Have you tried raising the window with the door key? Just hold it in the lock position and it should activate the motor. If it acts the same way you could rule out a bad switch.

Thanks. I did not know about the door lock raising the window

Assuming your car is 1990 or newer, the switch doesn't directly control the motor. It triggers relays inside the convenience module. If you continue to have issues, check that next (search the forum for more info on location etc).

curious - can you drop the window half way then lift it up normally... Or is the same bad behavior regardless?

I have only tried twice. I am concerned about not getting the window back up. The first time it was 2/3 down, the second time is was 1/3 down. I have a used convenience module coming, it sounds like that may be the issue

If it goes down and not up you can still remove door card, loosen the bolts and manually raise the glass. Get a few pieces of 1/2' PVC not longer than 3' at lowes (ore similar). Cut a slot on the end big enough to hold the window up. You will need to measure the distance to the bottom of the door obviously while you contemplate a new system but your window will be up and secure while driving etc. I did this for about 2 months as projects of life took over on my right rear door. Drove it that way for about 6 weeks until I had time to install new regulator. Same with the right front but both were cable / regulator issues.

As a public service - not a bad idea to get in there anyway and have a look to see what bits might be worn/broken in the bottom of the door, clean out the weepholes etc. remove old dried grease and re-lube it all....

Had the same issues with my 400E. Window would go down but not up or only in small steps. It was a bad window motor. The regulator portion is pretty robust. Remove the motor and see if the window runs free in the tracks. If it seems okay it’s most likely a bad motor.
