door speaker size?

im currently and slowly upgrading the sound system in my 92 500e. what are the specs of the door speakers? i understand they are very shallow at 2in, what approximate size are they? also, what head units is everyone using besides the retro upgrades from becker?

thanks

The cutout is 140mm, the outer diameter of the basket/driver is about 155mm. IIRC it's a 2 ohm driver? The typical aftermarket 5.25" drivers are too small (and wouldn't provide much bass anyway), and 6.5" are too large to fit.

I'm not aware of any direct replacement that will fit neatly into the factory plastic enclosure. And, if you are keeping the rest of the factory stereo (stock amps, etc) an aftermarket driver may not sound better, it possibly could end up sounding worse. There are few options in between the stock sound system, and a full aftermarket setup with custom doorboards like Jehnert (which sound very nice, but are NOT cheap after you factor in the cost of the full system).

ive been looking at the Jehnert and am not too fond of the pricing. all 4 corners have been upgraded and i have an amp ready to go and am debating on a head unit to use. thanks for the info

I'm not crazy about the cost of Jehnert either... but trying to get custom doorboards fabricated would likely cost even more. On the bright side you can get the Jehnert doorboards with or without drivers/crossovers. The full kit with drivers & crossovers is actually not a bad deal, depending on the markup for the USA dealer. I bought mine over 10 years ago direct from Germany, now I think you may have to buy from the US dealer, they may not sell direct.

I believe the original amps have built-in equalization and are designed for drivers with a specific impedance. If you change the drivers with the stock amps, the result is NOT always optimal. Remember that just because it sounds different, doesn't mean it sounds better. The Morel driver you linked to just might fit, it would be an interesting experiment if someone wants to plunk down ~$350 to try them out.

I have the full Jehnert system in two different 124's and it sounds very, very good. But it's not cheap for a complete conversion. I'd rather have dual 6.5" drivers than a single 6" but that's just me...

Yep the original amp probebly has some sort of time adjustment built in it, and when you start messing with different speakers/setups you are making a mess of it.

In my car the jehnert setup sounded underpowered. You didnt need go to high before you got clipping in the speakers.

If you only have the front dash speaker setup and no elements in the door the jehnert would be an upgrade. If you have door speakers i would just update the dash speakers if i could not find a speaker for the door. But you would need a 2ohm speaker setup. Blam Relax series are 2ohm and would be perfect with the original amp.

Original speakers are 2ohm. Same are the jehnert. Most after marked typs are 4ohm, and will be a bit harder to drive for the original amp. Many guys update to Rainbows and they are 4ohm so the original amp will only have half power when they are in use. So to get the most out of them you need an aftermarket amp.
And since the amp is made for 2ohm load i dont know how good it will be with a 4ohm load. Should not be a problem as they often has the biggest problems to be stable when you go down in ohm load.

So its not so easy to upgrade these cars "correct" on the sound side.

i saw your setup, i thought the mounting depth was about 2in

I have never had a original frontdoor cover with speakers off on a w124 car so i cant help you there. I just went of the measurements gxsr gave just to show that there are speakers out there that might fit.

I paid around 250$ for each of my custom made panels. And i guess that might be able to have it done cheaper in the US.

Right now im doing a budget upgrade in my daily car. An s124 (230te)
Fronts Focal 130AS
Rear doors Focal 100AC
Headunit Alpine UTE-93dab
Amp might be Alpine KTP-445A (only thing i have not bought yet so it might change)

Fronts need some mods to get in. I might do a thread on the build when i start on this.
In time i want to do subs in the rear floor tray. One or two 8 inch subs. The car needs to be a user/work car so i cant have a big box in the trunk. And i want to keep the spear wheel so i dont have to many options.

I had a crew last Thursday extending my driveway with an asphalt paving machine. They were heating their lunch, wrapped in foil, on the grill above the engine. Worked a charm.

I'm surprised they would mobilize a fullsized paving machine for such a small job.

It was just big enough of a job that they didn’t want to do it manually. They actually called for the machine from Jessup, about 40 mins away, after arriving. Which I’m glad about — the machine did a better job than they would have done manually.
