Rear Speed Sensor (ASR) Removal

I've been troubleshooting a ABS/ASR light and limp home mode. DTC has pointed to Left Rear Wheel Sensor which I'm looking to remove/replace from the top of the diff, but there doesn't seem to be enough room for it to come out as it comes into contact with the underside of the body.

If anyone has replaced rear speed sensors, was dropping the differential required to get it out?

I don't know if it's the same, as my car is a non-ASR 400E, though I think it should be, but when I was pulling rear speed sensor from the top of the differential it also felt like there was not enough room for it to be fully extracted. Turned out it was the cable, which was fully tensed/extended that prevented complete extraction. A little further upstream - I forget now - but I unclipped it from its holding groove or something like that, which allowed me back at the sensor itself, to to pull the cable up 1-2 inches forward (towards the sensor), providing enough slack in it for the sensor to come out.

You'll probably at least need to unbolt the diff to drop it enough to get the sensor out. Be careful not to let any dirt or debris fall into the hole. Lube the O-ring when installing the new sensor.

Thanks for the tip Kiev, I thought this was the case as well and have slack to the cable, but it still doesn't provide enough room.
 
Rising old thread.. is there FSM available for replacing those ASR sensors? I'm just wondering since EPC/Xentry indicates that there are various shim plates available for installing those sensors. So basically I'd like to know the installing depth and proper torque for mounting bolts. Or should I just measure old ones how close to diff gear they will be?

I believe the shims are matched to the housing, not the sensor. If you replace the sensor, use the same / existing shims.
 
I was able to find proper torque for the mounting hex bolt. 8 Nm. Bolts should be replaced when replacing the sensor. Installation depth is still mystery..

Bolts are replaced due to pre-applied threadlock on new ones. You can re-use the old bolts if they are in good condition, if you apply fresh blue threadlock compound.
