Exploring the MB STAR C3 (SDS)

Hi Jim,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with C4, it helps a lot!

Could you please ask CCD if they can create set with C4 DOip MUX + CD2019 38 pin cable? And maybe about discount price for 500E members? :)

Thank you in advance!
Right! I have found Car Diagnostic Tools Wholesale Shop to be very responsive over email / webform. You could give them a try w your suggestions!

I have confirmed that MB part number 6511-2461-99 works. It is an MB part, and the construction feels much more robust than the CCD cable.

Dagnabbit. Now I need to get an OE cable to keep up with the Joneses Jlaa's...

I have used SDS for the past 13 years and on various platforms. I would prefer to use a different system if available, as SDS is too complicated and slow. Unfortunately all the affordable aftermarket systems offer less features and don't have coding.

Since CCD has changed their website to carobdtool.com, I'm gonna leave this link here for posterity for future purchasers of the full 38-pin cable. @LWB250 Full 38 Pin Cable for MB SD C4 Star Diagnosis
The MB SD is reaching the end of the line unless you are only working on pre-2010 cars. Online programming is an issue for indi workshops and MB has plugged the remaining channels for this.

Good to know, thanks!

I'm up to a 2008 (W164) but I have no plans or intentions to go any more modern than this. If I had to buy a "modern" car it wouldn't be a Mercedes.

Anybody know a source that ships to US addresses, specifically APO? I can't get Ali Express to do it. Looking for a C4 (don't care for wifi or doip). Current car is Euro spec early 1995 SL500 with 38pin and ODBI. Blink code works, just want to get back to star. I have the HHTWin setup and whatnot in a VM. Just need a vendor to ship APO. Or if anybody is selling. Reasonable prices, not those $450+

Just ship it to a trusted member here, and then have them send it to the APO. I'm sure plenty of folks here would offer to help you out on this.

I've read this whole thread and I'm slowly gathering things for a C4 setup.

I recieved the "full 38 pin cable" from our friend at carobdtool

I'm struggling to pick a C4 multiplxer. It seems like such a crapshoot. Prices vary widely, anywhere from $300 to over $800. I've been looking on ebay, alibaba, etc.

How do I pick one?? Has anyone bought one recently they have had good luck with? I would buy from carobdtool but they are out of stock.

i spoke with Seven at carobdtool on wechat and he said they don't sell the c4 multiplexer anymore. He recommended this on for HHTWIN.

Anybody heard of this "M6" model multiplexeer?

@nocfn recently bought one from carobdtool….

I have one on order as well. Ordered last week. How long did it take to receive yours?
I ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad last week from them and it just got to me this week from Hong Kong DHL. I got it preloaded with their SW to work with the C4 that I bought from them 2 years ago. (I gave up on the POS Dell 630 I had that probably worked with a C3 but I could never get properly working with a C4 using both DAS and HHTWIN).

Everything works great with DAS and HHTWIN now. The first picture is DAS w/ my 210, and the second picture is HHTWIN w/ my 124 (engine is not running though). Anyways, everything works and it took me literally 5 minutes to set up. WiFi connection to the C4 is STRONG STRONG STRONG ...... (the DOIP C4 is a DHCP server that leases out IP addresses to the laptop).

The Dell 630 always had flaky wifi performance, with both the internal chipset and, to a much lesser extent, external USB Wifi dongles. The Thinkpad -- no problem. Also - @gsxr - note their SW comes with HHTWIN already on the Win10 Desktop.

I regret spending SOOOOOOO much time trying to get that D630 working 100%.

I agree here with the above, I have the Lenovo with the e500 full 34 pin 38 pin cable with HHT/WIN and all other SDS 6 level software. Same people, everything plugged in out of the box and there are a mass of other cords for some newer vehicles as well.

Did you use the 38 pin cable that came with the super M6? Or did you buy the “full 38 pin C4 cable” separately ?

I can’t tell if the super M6 uses the same cables as a C4.

The C3, C4, and M6 multiplexers each use different cables with different connectors they cannot be interchanged.

If you buy an M6, you do not need (and, cannot use) the "full-38-C4" cable.

So then the cable that comes standard with the M6 must have ALL 38 pins connected so I can read ALL modules in HHTWIN?

They aren’t shipping the M6 cables with half the pins dead/disconnected like they did with the C4’s?

that’s my question.

Nocfn are you able to see ALL of you modules? EZL, LH module, diagnostic module, base module, all of them. That’s the question

I believe @nocfn is able to connect to all six modules on the W124+M119 which allow communication via HHT-Win.

This does not answer the question about all 38 wires, as the 140 and 129 chassis have far more modules to communicate with. Someone would need to take an ohm meter to the M6 cable and verify all 38 conductors are present.

I will be able to confirm the R129 capabilities when my tool arrives. Hopefully that will be a yes since my friend also has a SL that will need this tool.
Please let us know. I already bought “full” cable for C4, but have hard time finding C4. I am willing to get C6, I just beed full HHTWin functionality for R129 (1995 SL320 Euro spec OBDI).

I received my C6 tool and laptop today. When I go into HTTWIN I was not successful the first couple times due to a multiplexer fault. 3rd time I got in. However I do not see chassis R129 in my list. W124, and W124 034,036 are there as is W140. Maybe nocfn can look on his new laptop ad see if that option appears on his. I will contact Seven tomorrow to see what can be done.

@Alphasud40 , do you see the r129 if you enter DAS first which then kicks into HHT-WIN?

No so I need to open DAS first? Okay I will give that a try.
I'm not exactly sure if you need to open DAS first for the r129, but when I open HHTWIN directly from the 9/2023 SDS build's desktop (not using DAS), I do not see the r129 either. (That said I do not own an r129)

Correct - start with DAS, select R129 (up to 1998), and DAS should launch a separate instance of HHT-Win. I suspect this method will bring up a different HHT-Win instance that should work for the R129.

I think.

:doof:

Fyi - this is using DAS with my carobdtool 9-2023 SDS build. Fire up DAS first which launches a special r129-ified HHTWIN.

Thanks for confirming, Jlaa! Interesting that it's a 129-specific instance. I wonder if the R129 is the only "special" chassis...

:klink:

Will this work with vmware version of xp (it’s a generic dell with win11)? Thats where I keep my das/hhtwin? If so, this c6 is a no brainer at current price for me and R129.

Finally had time at lunch today to try out the C6 on my 99 R129. After debugging the human interface I was able to connect to all the modules on this car. After performing a short test I went back and communicated with at least 5 modules before I ran out of time during lunch. I’m really happy with this tool purchase. Finally a scan tool solution that works out of the box and many thanks to forum members here who helped me. This is what makes this Mercedes forum the best on the internet.

great to hear, sounds like this is the new go-to. thanks for the update

@Alphasud40, did DAS launch HHT-Win (see photos in post #190 above) for the 1999 R129, or were all functions within DAS?

When I launched DAS I has to select the R129 chassis from the DAS menu. Then it launched the HHT-WIN application. Then navigate within HHT to perform the tests. DAS remains in the background. I would have taken pictures but I was outside and the screen was washed out. I wished I still had my W140 to test the capabilities of the scan tool.

I've spent most of this evening reading this entire thread which contains some great detective work!

I have a couple of questions which I hope those who are up and running can potentially answer.

I bought (blindly, a friend collected for me) a C5 setup with everything included except the laptop very cheaply on Facebook Marketplace. The 38 pin cable has contacts in all the mux end cable connector (visual check, not pinned out at both ends yet). It also works with my W164.

I now have a Dell 630 with an SSD sourced from a local diagnostic guy (who trades on eBay in the UK and specialises in BMWs) which appears to work correctly - launching DAS then runs HHT-Win and I can connect to the car (R129 SL500 built March 1998 i.e. a late Gen 2 car).

1) Does HHT-Win list all potentially fitted modules for the connected car? I see ADS on the list which I don't have and therefore obviously cannot connect to but there are a good few others such as ATA (I can check the others tomorrow and advise if necessary) which I would expect to be able to communicate with and can't.

2) If I buy another Mux (e.g. a C3, C4) on it's own, will it work with my existing laptop / SSD and cables etc.?

3) I have WIS but all returned documents from search are in German - is there a way to change this?

FYI - for anyone connecting via the green Ethernet cable supplied from Mux to laptop, I tried a bog standard long patch cable which I intend to run around the edges of my garage from the car to my bench / workstation and it worked fine. I had read and heard it is a "special" cable but this appears incorrect.

1) HHT-Win will list all possible modules, including items which ARE NOT PRESENT on the vehicle! It has no way to tell what modules are present, so it shows them all.

2) The MUX is generally interchageable, but the cables are different between C3, C4, and M6. I do not know what a C5 is... possibly C4+DOIP?

3) Yes, you can change the language in Settings / Preferences / Options.

Enjoy!

1) Ok, I guess I need to know which R129 modules I should be able to read i.e. are present @Alphasud40 can you help me here?

2) Yes, I think it is a C4 plus DOIP. Example here:

3) Thanks, I will try this.

Do you mean that HHT-WIN lists all possible modules that are seeable by HHT-WIN, including those which are seeable by HHT-WIN but not installed in the car, but not necessarily all modules that are available for scanning in the car by SDS? It may be that I am not reading correctly. On my 2002 w210, which is different from earlier w210s, HHT-Win will not list all modules that the car has. I have to go into DAS, which lists a lot more modules than goin into HHT-Win does. See here for what DAS shows:

IMG_3722.jpeg IMG_3723.jpeg

But if I go into HHT-Win directly, I get this:

3 - Access 1 .jpeg 4 - Access 2.jpeg 5 - Access 3.jpeg 6 - Cannot Access.jpeg

For what it is worth, I think a SW build set up for a C3 might not exactly work with a C4 unless various .ini files are changed --- I'm not very clear on this.
