Eric, where did you get the tranny rebuilt?

Somewhere in San Diego??? :sarcasm:

I know this sounds kind of ridiculous but I don't really know all the details. Apparently Matt sent it to an acquaintance / friend of his that has been rebuilding transmissions for a very long time (like decades) and knows the .3 like the back of his hand. I believe he did the work at his house and did so kind of as a favor when Matt told him about the level of restoration we are doing thus the quality he really wanted. Anyways sent him all the new parts, had the case tumbled about a month or so ago and I received those pictures yesterday via a text message.

Sounds about right to me! The transmission, however, looks rediculous.

Restoration - 8/03/15:

Very long weekend well and I'm pretty much a walking corpse right now. Fortunately Matt as Leistung has quite a few miles less on his odometer than me and works like a madman but thanks to him and the assistance of captruff and another buddy of ours Jarvis (who is also a great MB tech) we got a ton finished this weekend. As far as making Legends of the Autobahn on the 14th I think we are going to be cutting it very close at least without someone dropping dead (and the odds are it will be me)

Don't worry Dave I might run out of money before we get to the fluids. A six pack off Duff might be all I can swing at that point. :alky:

hehe it does indeed ,dude! its just a matter of a few more bodyclips....nuts and bolts.and cleanings sessions underneath the car....and its of to the mental institution :)

love the work on the 500e.magic right there :)

Way to go!!!

It looks great Eric. Don't drop dead before you get to drive it.

Take Care

Wow is all I can say, amazing.....what a slog to get there but so going to be worth it

Realize I'm somewhat newb to posting and getting to know people's cars on here, but is there any anyone else out there that people know of who has undertaken a restoration of this magnitude or is this the first one?......I am dying to see it once its all fully put back together......this will no doubt be the nicest one in existence after all is said and done right?..........Forget the 25k mi garage queen with everything rotted over 25 yrs, this is literally factory new!

Truly awesome

Thanks for the compliments all and for reminding me captruff that we need to be finished by the 12th (or very early morning of the 13th) to make Legends. Maybe we should buy a big digital "build countdown timer" like they use on West Coast Customs and hang it on the wall at Leistung???

Restoration Update - 8/06/15:

Less than 7 days before the car is headed to Monterey. Painters came back yesterday to do final sanding and polishing. Game plan is to take care of the last few engine related items tonight and tomorrow and have it running again Saturday (fingers crossed). Looks like the last big hurdle is the putting the interior back together but fortunately Matt and Jarvis busted a$$ on it Monday and Tuesday and not only got the rebuilt heater box installed and dash back in the car but also the headliner removed and reinstalled after installing new sunroof drains. We are not out of the woods yet but I am feeling a lot better than I was last Sunday....

:relieved:

It truly is a new old car.Might set a record.

Funny you say that. I know this is going to :stirthepot: on the board but I was able to get the last W124 V8 speedo MB had in stock. I know some will frown on this and I do understand their point / perspective but I can always have the odometer adjusted to reflect the original mileage on the car. However for the interim while it is a show / trailer queen I think it fits the bill.

I don't see an issue with the odometer as long as the original miles are noted in the restoration documentation. For all intents and purposes this is a new 500E. It is doubtful you will be selling this car anytime soon unless you just like throwing money out the window. If you do sell please put me first on the list of potential buyers.

Most of us fanatics have much more invested in our cars then they will be worth in our lifetimes. Mine is the body shop as we speak just to make it a little better than it was before.

Eric, the new speedo is for a 400E/E420... the shift point indicators will be incorrect. Are you OK with that? (doubtful the concours judges would notice, but you never know!)

The car won't be judged on originality. It will be judged on condition.

Wow good eye GSXR I never even noticed that until you mentioned it. Anyways as small as they are I agree only a handful of very knowledgeable people (like yourself) would catch that. Obviously I would prefer it to be the correct one but I'll tell you the Orange just pops off that thing and with everything else that is being replaced, refinished or VERY thoroughly cleaned up I guess I can live with it. Also I'm not sure if you recall a while back when this issue was discussed in another thread the list price for these speedos was extremely lower than it used to be. Therefore I got it for only a couple hundred bucks. Had the list price still been $1,100 - $1,200 I would not have bought it as although a bit faded as you can see in the side by side picture with the new one it is not terrible therefore at some it may go back in the car and if it does I will obviously adjust the mileage on the odometer to include any miles put on the car with the new one.

That is good to know, thanks Ken. I thought I might get an automatic 1/4 or 1/2 point deduction for running the SL 2 piece wheels. Not that I would run 8 holes anyways but I just figure the sheer shock and awe effect of the 2 piece wheels will help me score more points with the overall presence of the car anyways.

The issue is going to be the knowledge by the judges. This was definitely apparent last year in the Modified class judging. The rarity of Jeff's cars should have won the day but sadly it wasn't. Jeff should have taken first and second in the class IMHO.

Ohhh man don't bring that up around captruff. The SLK "Second Look" edition winning Class 7 last year is a very sore subject. :pissed:

Hands down his 16V should have taken 1st followed by the E60. Some cash must have exchanged hands between that owner and the judges as that car was a joke. :bs:

Eric, I forgot to mention one other minor issue... the .034 speedometer will not read correctly in the .036 due to the different axle ratio and tire size. You'll need to wire in a converter box for correction. I use YellowBox, there are a couple other similar units on the market as well. Make sure you order the type for a TWO wire inductive sensor. Most converter boxes are designed for a 3-wire Hall sensor and these will not work on the W124 speedo signal.

The box that I've used for the past 10-11 years in my 560SEC is switchable between 2- and 3-wire systems, FYI.

Great.... I wasn't too bothered by the shift point indicators but I was worried about a possible issue like this. Anyways thanks for the input and suggestion about the YellowBox (interesting little contraption). For now I am just going to throw my original speedo back in the cluster until I can figure out what I will do with the new one. I might try contacting North Hollywood Speedometer and see if it would be feasible to send them the both the new speedo and one out of the 500E Jeff is currently parting out and see if they can swap the necessary parts between the two so it corrects this issue. However if that is not an option I will definitely go with Plan B and buy one of those YellowBoxes.

Mine isn't a YellowBox in my SEC. I don't think those are switchable.

Rather, the one I have is called the "Electronic Ratio Adapter" and is made by Abbott Enterprises in the USA.

The address for the company is www.abbott-tach.com
Toll-free 800-643-5973

The instructions are easy and I installed mine in January, 2006.

Here's a link to the product:
http://www.abbott-tach.com/era.htm

The two- or three-wire VSS (vehicle speed sensor) setting is set via four DIP switches in the box.
The speed calibration is set via another series of 12 DIP switches in the box.

Almost 10 years installed ... hard to believe. It's worked flawlessly and my speedo is super accurate.

Cheers,
Gerry

A VDO shop should be able to adjust the new speedo so it will read correctly without a converter box. If you go this route, make sure to verify both the speedometer and odometer readings via GPS afterwards.
