Interesting. Might not look bad once the hub caps are refurbished.

So far my plan for the wheels is to strip the old clear coat, polish the lips, paint the center and spokes body color along with the hubcaps.

The issue is going to be how to not paint the Mercedes star and shiny bits of the hubcap.

MB used to make a special tool for painting hubcaps, a metal piece that covered up the tri-star in the center and allowed you to paint the rest of the cap as you needed to. In effect, it "masked" the MB star. These went out of production about 10-12 years ago, but good MB body/paint shops that have been in business for a while will have them. The MB part number for this is (was) 115 589 42 63 00.

Gerry

KarlC,
I see list of more options, the 275 is interesting - lowered seats! I have to do this mod!

Ever since I got the car I wished it had a bit more head room, even tho my car has the 275 option of the lowered seats. So I took a look under the seat to see what could be done and I found that someone had done a raised drivers seat mod to the lowered seat LOL. I removed the blocks and gained an inch of head room !

Couldn't you just get an old hubcap, die grinder or Dremel tool as well as a long threaded rod and make a mask......

Ron

It's still on the MBNA price list, so it shows at parts.com and other places as well. However if it's NLA, your order will be cancelled. You MUST contact an MB dealership, or the Classic Center, and specifically ask them to check stock in both USA and Germany.

I like Ron's idea. Maybe Kent will start selling a home-made version of these.

I just checked with Tom, here is his response LOL .....

Hi Karl,

I always wanted to use one of those for a branding iron for my wife’s horses (only 1 left now). These haven’t been available for around 20 years. They never really worked all that well either. We still use a layer of masking tape and an exacto knife to get that precision edge. Lots of work but well worth the end results. Happy New Year!!!

Kind regards,

You can mask it with tape, that's how a lot of folks do it.

Karl, here's something of interest for you .... http://www.mercedesheritage.com/2013/stroke-8s-hip-at-last/

The article and style are probably more slanted toward "Diesel Hipsters" like folks who drive Benzes around Portland, OR and Seattle (a la Zeitgeist), but the car seems reminiscent of Karl's.

Cheers,
Gerry
Here is the kind of chicks that you should be getting with your W114, Karl....

Now you need to get the rare Euro headlight wipers for your forthcoming lights. The ultimate in bling, and trust me, chicks go NUTS for vintage Benz headlight wipers. And heck, this bed is well-equipped with them .. the owner was really thinking when he executed this bed !!

On a 6.3, the factory wipers were sort of "S" shaped to go around the two stacked round lamps, and rotated on a pin. And there was a squirter too. These were fairly common in Scandinavian markets (moreso than elsewhere) but about as rare as rocking-horse poop in any case. In the US, almost unheard of. I once (back in the day) heard a semi-confirmed story of a 6.3 owner getting sex in, on and around his 6.3 (must have been quite a wild time) just due to the presence of a NOS pair of 109 headlight wipers.

So....get on it !!

Cheers,
Gerry

P.S. Germany is generally called the "Fatherland" while Russia is referred to as the "Motherland." Don't know why that is, but.... vook, Roma, do you gents know?

You know, it's freaking sad that U.S. cars got inferior headlights for what seems like all Mercedes bound for the States. When I had my 300E and then bought the 500E, the first thing that caught my eye were the crappy headlights (style and light output). Switching to Euro headlights for my 500E was my very first upgrade to the car and when my co-workers saw the Hella headlights, they all mentioned how much better the car looked.

Are we (in the U.S.) the foster children for Mercedes...?

It's not Mercedes fault... it's the bloody DOT (and/or NTSB?). The federal nannies said the Euro lights were verboten because the beam/pattern did not meet DOT requirements (which were stupid and antiquated). So MB had to fit garbage lights through the early 1990's.

Something changed in the early 90's, and the 1994-up facelifted 124's finally got lights which were darn close to equal to their Euro brethren.

Side note - the 500E Euro lights went WAY up in price as of Jan-1. If you didn't get in on that deal while it lasted (under $500/pair delivered via parts.com), you're OOL. It's near double that now.

:wormhole:

As long as the 036 euro lights are still available, that price is still $200 less then what I paid when I got my Hella euro headlights back in 2005 from Speed-Autoteile.

Since I wasn't born in this country and English is not my native tongue, do I have the right to vent against the U.S. and its federal nannies???

Never seen wiper on those headlights, even the photos have to be rare, thx Gerry

Da, but only if you answer the "Fatherland" vs. "Motherland" question :hehehe:

I am so glad that was my first mod. Got a great deal on mine.

Any updates on the wheels?

No, I've been busy but I have been driving and getting to know the car .....

Yesterday, I i had my fist back seat passenger, she tried to tilt the back of the front seat forward so she could get out of the back seat. It would not move, I'm thinking this is odd as I have tilted this seat forward several times, so I then she pushed on the drivers side, same issue the seat back would NOT tilt forward, she was stuck in the back seat.

Then I remembered what you said with the car running the seat backs will not just tilt forward, so I had her push the little black button on the back panel and walla now she could tilt the seat forward and exit the car !

So my vacuum system is working for the seats.

The coupes little black button .....
