Schweet! A very rare Arctic White 500E (grill), or it it an E 5 0 0 (trunk)?

It looks suspiciously like a genuine Factory AMG to me, with all of those AMG logos everywhere.

Did this car not pop up a few years ago, though? I seem to remember it....

Yep, that's Swordfish's old car. There was more info in the classified ad by the previous owner (before Swordfish) on Benzworld or MBWorld (forget which forum it was posted on). I think it might have the 2.82 gears from the 500E, but it DOES NOT have ASR, despite the warning triangle in the speedometer. Looks clean overall, only major flaw I spotted was the sagging headliner. It still has the wrong rocker panel on the driver side - bummer:

I believe the owner before Mike was a doctor...supposedly all the 500E fenders and bumper covers, etc were bought brand new! He spent big money on creating this 'tribute'. God bless his wallet.

I've seen it in person a few times too (w/o the white grill). I 'll post of pic of it next to mine, at first glance it'sa '500E'. I like the lack of ASR on it big time ! But it does need the 500E hubs and a few other key parts to complete the transformation. Jeff's full black 500E interior that's for sale would go a long way over the stock 400E interior....although I'm a fan of the white/tan combo myself.

It was also on eBay earlier this winter.

Like this one alot, but still waiting to afford a real white 500E. :D

It was priced correctly when Swordfish bought it, somewhere around $6k, IIRC.... not worth the current asking price though.

Yes thats my former conversion.

Yikes ! someone went nuts with all those AMG badges and trunk ornaments ! I debadged that car when I got it. Talk about markup. IIRC, I sold it for 7800.00. Less than what I had into it after purchase, shipping, repairs and wheels.

Might not be the real 036 but that car hauled and drove very nice. Gave me no issues in the short time I had it.

Hoping to buy David Hendy's 199 soon.

A perfect example of badge engineering gone real bad. Someone remind me what part 'AMG' had in this car? Doh !

I believe there are key pieces missing from inside the rear bumper, hence the waviness at the bottom. I did see most all the receipts when Mike owned it and it showed the bumper covers were bought as new OE items.

Ahh yes, the hybrid 124.035 ( :hammerhead:), I remember this example. Looks a bit better with the wheels in silver, though they did nothing to fix that gnarly rear bumper warp. If all else fails it could be a future track rat candidate.
 
Is it just me or it does have wrong passenger headlamp now ? Also gaps between bumper and front grille looks weird ?

I think both headlights are 400E type, not 500E, but it's not entirely clear from the photos. There are a few oddities all around. It would be a fun car for the right price. At least the asking price is within reason.

The whole car is kinda wry, though I should admit it is very clean (at least appears very clean on photos). It is kinda weird that one rocker panel is proper 124036 but the other is just a regular 124 which does not make any sense .

White color looks really nice .
 
Does this car have the old 2.24 or 2.82 rear end?
I would think it would fly, on top end speed, if it retained the 2.24.
 
From memory, I believe it has the 2.24 diff, but I'm not positive. The car doesn't have ASR (despite the warning triangle in the speed) so they couldn't swap the 500E diff and keep ABS functional. Sure hope they had a VDO shop adjust the odometer when they did the speedometer swap. See the links in post #5 for more background.

Thanks for the update, Trae. Hope they sourced a proper 2.82 ABS diff (from 400SE) to keep the ABS functional! The ASR diff no workee with ABS cars, and vice-versa. Different sensor locations.

Now on BaH with no reserve. Shame the ABS was never fixed properly (ASR diff installed in non-ASR doesn't work, as they discovered); also the 036 driver rocker panel was never sourced either (visible in photos that left+right sides are not the same).

Speedometer is from the 500E, not sure if the odometer was adjusted to match the chassis miles at time of conversion.


No Reserve: 500E-Powered 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E
This 1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E is powered by a replacement 5.0-liter M119 V8 that was sourced from a 500E, and additional modifications performed by a previous owner included installation of 500E fenders, quarter panels, brakes, rear differential, and exhaust system. The car is finished in white over beige leather and has spent time in Florida, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma before being acquired by the selling dealer in December 2020. Additional equipment consists of a four-speed automatic transmission, a Renntech ECU chip, a sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, and a factory cassette stereo. This W124 shows 129k miles and is offered at no reserve with service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Oklahoma title.
The car is finished in Arctic White (147U) with light gray lower cladding, and modifications fitted by a previous owner include 500E front fenders and rear quarter panels. The selling dealer notes that the sunroof can only tilt, the power antenna is not functional, and the rear bumper cover is warped.
Aftermarket 18″ wheels show curb rash and wear 245/40 Barum Bravuris tires all around. Front and rear brakes sourced from a 500E were fitted during previous ownership, while work performed in preparation for the sale included replacement of the center drag link and inner and outer tie rods. The selling dealer notes that the anti-lock brake and Acceleration Slip Regulation systems are not operational.
The cabin features seating upholstered in beige leather with matching carpets, and wood veneers accents the dash, center console, and door panels. Amenities include power-adjustable front seats with position memory for the driver, automatic climate control, and a factory cassette stereo. The selling dealer notes that the headliner is sagging.
A steering wheel mounted to a power-adjustable column frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an inset clock, and a combination gauge. The six-digit odometer shows 129k miles. An interior tour video has been provided by the selling dealer.
The 5.0-liter M119 V8 is said to have been sourced from a 1992 500E and was fitted to the vehicle in 2001. Additional work performed at the time of the engine swap included replacement of the upper and lower wiring harnesses, timing chain and guide, power steering pump, oil pan, multiple sensors, valve cover gaskets, and coolant hoses along with an air conditioning system service. A Renntech ECU chip is also said to have been installed during time with a previous owner, while an oil and filter change was carried out by the selling dealer shortly after their acquisition.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and a rear differential sourced from a 500E. An exhaust system from a 500E has also been fitted.
The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in Michigan, Illinois, North Dakota, New York, and Oklahoma through the latest entry in May 2020. Walk-around and driving videos are presented below.

What a blast from the past !

I think I have a picture of it next to mine when Mike from NY had it. Mike said he spoke with the owner who did the conversion a number of times...but I don't think he ever asked the Dr. why he just didn't buy a 500E.
 
Car is being sold by a DEALER, per the auction description text.

The photos are absolutely pathetic, and among the worst I have ever seen on an HaT auction. With this car, they are REALLY lowering their standards. It's pretty easy to deduce that the ONLY reason this car is being auctioned, is that it is a NO RESERVE auction. I am highly doubting this car is going to even hit $10,000. It is probably worth $10K in parts, as a donator to help keep 500Es on the road.

It's on the high side given that it's incomplete (missing rocker panel, ABS not working) and not in the best shape. But it has the widebody stuff which is nearing unobtanium these days. I'd rather have Trae's 040 but I suspect that will bid quite a bit higher.

Now, if it was just a plain (narrow-body) 400E with 5.0L engine and stuff not working, yes $11k+ would be crazy money.

This thing does pretty well still on the selling block.

I think when Mike sold it a dozen or so years back , it wasn't far from this latest price.
