1994 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG

This 1994 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG was delivered new in Japan [Germany, then exported to Japan] and was acquired by the current owner in 2022 before being imported to Canada. Power is provided by a 6.0-liter M119 DOHC V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, and the car is finished in Polar White over black leather upholstery. Equipment includes 18″ AMG wheels, a lowered [AFTERMARKET] suspension, fog lights, a power sunroof, an AMG exhaust system, Automatic Slip Control, automatic climate control, a Pioneer CD stereo, heated power-adjustable front seats, and cruise control. Work performed under current ownership is said to have involved repainting the rear quarter panels and replacing the cabin air filter and various fluids. This E60 AMG is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner in Canada with a clean Carfax report and Ontario registration in the name of the owner’s company.

The E60 AMG was based on the contemporary E500 and features wheel arch flares, revised bodywork, and a lower ride height when compared to other W124 models. This example was finished from the factory in Polar White (149U), and the rear quarter panels are said to have been refinished under current ownership. Additional exterior details include headlights with washers and wipers, integrated fog lights, window tint, a retractable antenna, a power sunroof, and dual square exhaust outlets. The seller notes that the left side mirror is discolored, and chips and scratches around the body can be viewed in the gallery below along with cracks in the windshield.

Silver 18″ AMG wheels are mounted with 225/40 front and 265/35 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires that show date codes from 2013 and 2017. The car is equipped with Automatic Slip Control (ASR), and braking is handled by four-wheel ventilated discs. The suspension has been modified with aftermarket shocks and springs.

The cabin features heated power-adjustable front seats upholstered in black leather along with carbon-fiber trim on the dashboard, center console, and door panels. Additional appointments include automatic climate control, a Pioneer CD stereo, a power-adjustable steering column, dual front airbags, rear window blinds, and cruise control. Cracks are present in the center stack trim. The cabin air filter is said to have been replaced under current ownership.

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel features carbon-fiber accents and frames a 320-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, an analog clock, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 147k kilometers (~92k miles), approximately 50 kilometers of which were added under current ownership.

The 6.0-liter M119 DOHC V8 features four valves per cylinder and was factory rated at 375 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Service under current ownership is said to have involved fluid changes.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The exhaust system is damaged, and corrosion is present on various underside components. Additional underbody photos are provided in the gallery.

Whats this one gonna go for? Guesses?
Value is tough to guess, because (1) it's in rough condition, and (b) there are a lot of modifications / missing original parts - like the NLA suspension. I'm not even sure it will crack six figures. More likely RNM?

Also - is it my eyes, or is the engine oil cooler missing? If so, along with the 4.2L EZL, that makes me want to verify power output and/or displacement. At least get a photo of the engine serial number and see if it matches the datacard.

And - the rear glass is not original. LHT headlights will be tough to replace with RHT.

Hi all. I’m the proud owner of an E50 which I recently purchased from Japan and is on its way to me. Can’t wait. I’m hoping to also purchase an E60 and am doing some due diligence on the one advertised for sale on BAT at present. Question. Is the serial number on the bottom left of the AMG sticker on page 98 of the photos in this thread specific to this car? I just want to verify in my mind the authenticity of this car.

It is not a serial. There are no serial numbers on decals, period. Those are part numbers for the specific decal/sticker. The decals are NLA, you cannot buy new originals from the dealer anymore.

I just want to verify in my mind the authenticity of this car.
The datacard includes code 957 so it was originally an authentic E60 AMG with 6L engine and AMG suspension. However, in current form the unique AMG suspension components are all gone and also NLA, and therefore difficult to replace / restore to original. Next question would be if the original engine is still present, you need a photo of the serial number stamped on the engine block to start with.

A dyno graph or other performance data would also help, but only if the engine is making normal power... you can have a real 6L that is only making 5L power, so this is only useful if the power/performance is as expected. The 4.2L EZL (ignition module) makes me wonder what else isn't original. I'd also ask for a photo of the 4 computer modules in the CAN box to verify they are all correct.

I am not sure what these sheets are, but recently they have become a trend in these export auction cars.
Is this the answer to the "where is the service history" and "how do we verify the mileage" questions? did thousands of cars get serviced at the same independent workshop?

It is not a serial. There are no serial numbers on decals, period. Those are part numbers for the specific decal/sticker. The decals are NLA, you cannot buy new originals from the dealer anymore.

Thanks so much. A world of knowledge. So helpful. 😄

ok dewey, now here me out - buy this, stuff this engine in your car and sell the rest to a zellennial that likes the vintage modern look

edit: damn, that was suppose to be my inside voice

Still waiting on a photo of the engine serial number.

EDIT: Photo uploaded! Serial matches the datacard. More driving videos were also uploaded but I don't think he ever got beyond 1/2 throttle, and didn't go above 4000rpm either. I wanna see a WOT pull!

Engine temperature on the last two tests is pushing 100 C, is that normal? my E500 hovers between 80 and 90 even under spirted driving here in Texas.
Depends on ambient temps, but it does seem on the high side for April in Canada. Ambient indicated is 26C/78F.

I'm seeing nearly 105°C which indicates a cooling system issue that will need to be addressed.

definitely high for the current spring time weather. i hover right at 90, AC on, mid 90s w/ full humidity in nyc in summer traffic. it should cool down when youre driving faster, especially on the highway

Edit: I thought the marked line was 90 - its 100*

No cool harness (I believe those keep the fans constantly on?). My fans kick in right about the 90 line, cools it down pretty quickly and goes down even more when I start moving.

Edit: just watched the video again (💤) I know these cars run hot but that car is running really hot for not being in traffic and during the spring.

The cool harness does not keep the fans constantly on, the fans turn off once the temperature drops. If a cool harness is set to kick the fans on at 98 degrees, once the temperature drops to about 84-85 degrees, the fans turn off. From the factory, on an 036, the fans turn on at about 105 degrees. But if your fans turn on at 90 degrees, something has been modified.

The electric fans normally engage on low speed with AC running, and engage high speed at 107°C. If your fans engage anywhere near 90C with AC off, your car likely has a CoolHarness™.

Totally agree. Could be he has the AC on and the electric fans aren't engaged (few different things can cause this), and/or the fan clutch is freewheeling more than it should. New owner will need to send it to Blue Ridge for diagnosis...

is the arrow pointing to the 90 line? or is the line 100?

The unmarked line is 100C. A needle width above is roughly 105C.

In the middle between unmarked and 120C is ~110C, but the scale isn't linear, so it gets tough to estimate temps in the 100-120 range. Need live data from HHT-Win to pinpoint the actual number.

Thanks, I meant 100 and when it's a tick over that line the fans kick in. I thought that line was 90

With AC on, the fans should rarely need to kick on high, as you generally won't see the temps over 100C due to the fans being on low speed from the AC.

With AC off, if you are getting over 100C and the electric fans make a noticeable drop in coolant temp, your fan clutch has issues - a good clutch wouldn't allow this condition.

You’re referring to when the car is in motion?

Yes. However, a really dead fan clutch will also affect airflow with the car not in motion, and engine at idle. Either way, temps over 100C generally indicate a need to inspect the cooling system components.

The sales price to seller engagement ratio on this one was sky high!
I really hope the new owner ships it to Jono so we can get a report on hidden needs, besides the obvious stuff in the photos. Still cracks me up that the seller was too chicken to go beyond half throttle. It's not a Chiron or Demon. And I want to know what it sold for in Japan!
