400/500 sway bar upgrade options?

Hello,

I have 1992 400E and looking for bigger sway bars.
What are my options?
I allready bought R129 500 30mm front bar so i would need something to compensate that on back, or full set.

1. E500E 28mm&18mm bars? Cant find used here in my country, maybe new ones from the dealer or here?

2. Those reproduction bars, any news on those topics?

3. W210 Amg/H&r 20mm rear bar, i read somewhere here that it wouldnt fit W124 V8 engined cars due to different subframe?

4. Read somewhere that somebody put R171 rear bar, but dont know was his car V8 engined or not?

5. Local guy who can make me new bar(s) within 30mm-14mm for few hundred, but he's out of work for atleast two months(injured, dont really know when he returns)

Also you can offer me if you have something for sale, but the price range must be in hundreds not thousands for my budjet.

Have you installed the R129 front bar? I'm not sure if it will fit at all, and may at least require modifying the mounting brackets. The shape is different.

Also you can offer me if you have something for sale, but the price range must be in hundreds not thousands for my budjet.

If the R129 front bar works, just buy a new 500E rear bar. There's nothing else available without having a full custom set produced, and unless your local guy has made custom Mercedes bars before with multiple bends, I'm not confident he'll be able to make them that cheap.

Gsxr, i havent installed the R129 500 bar yet. Waiting to get it and yes i have read about that inner mounting modification needed.

If i cant get any other rear bar then ill buy that 500e bar.

This guy/company is very experienced on springs and swaybars, they have done those over 35 years and they do those essentially for rallycars and said to me that could make a 30mm/20mm kit for 500€

On the Facebook there is also this company Hedgehog motorsport, have you heard? They have nice w201 projects and make custom parts for them. Also some for w124/r129. They have for sale w201 rear bars 19mm for 130usd and 22mm for 140usd if i remember correct.
I asked them and they could make w124 32/22 bar kit for 400usd but the shipping would be something like 200-300usd to me + 25% tax.

So just weighting my options now.

I had Bilstein B8 struts and bilstein lowering springs but now i sold them because i bought YellowSpeed Racing adjustable strut and spring kit. Really want to get thicker sways because dont want to scratch my sidemirrors on the ground anymore when cornering

The 129 bar fits but it is to far forward. So the mounts are flexed. It works but it is not right. Really just some billet mounts on swivels would be best.
The rear bar I have used w210 ones and now have the r171 rear bar in. It was like 55.00 when I bought it. It is a little to bit long but some custom bent and reinforced links and or bending the end of the sway bar in an 1" on each side. I am widening my rear track on my car so not needed.
And of course the 500e bars are direct fit as said.

No but I think I had the v8 subframe in the car at the time. I think what you are talking about is that they rub on the front tubular section. I put a piece of felt on there if I remember. I think it was a possible contact point but it rubbed the paint off on the felt and that was it. The only interference point I had was that part would rub on my fuel feed line. It was barely touching. The ones that have an elbow on them did not touch.
Honestly just get the 500e one. They are not that expensive. If you want something bigger then you really ought to be looking at other suspension parts like shocks and springs and weight. And money for the sway bar will start to look cheap. I am really considering building a push rod/bell crank setup for mine some day. Only way to put proper shocks and springs in the rear end.

500e rears are NLA.
210 e55 rear are plentiful.
Cool idea on the bell cranks. Bust out the solidworks and the cnc plasma.

I had upgraded to w210 AMG rear bar on my 1987 w124 AMG project car Dave.

IIRC I made custom mounts and shifted them forward by a few mm so it cleared properly. I'll dig out pics and post them later

So this was the old 200 bar VS the w210 AMG Bar:



Custom brackets made from decent thickness mild steel. Look approx like OE also using the w210 cast brackets:



The w210 sway bar did foul the fuel line when first offered up. I did slide the new mount location forward on the car and welded them on so as to create a clear 4mm or so clearance to the fuel line. Went back together nice:



Note: This 3.6 AMG swap project car is still unfinished and has not been driven so I cannot comment on specific handling improvements or characteristics as yet.

Tight with fuel tank outlet hose but no problems!
Did the first test this week with H&R E55 springs to......

Is there really a market for Sway bars for the W124? I am able to produce sway bars for the 500E.
Minimum order is 100 units @ 325-350 each Front or Rear.

So essentially front and rear bar $650-$700.00 plus shipping.

BTW the fancy tuning fork sway bars where it's 28mm down to 16mm then 22mm i can't produce thats a heating technique which requires extensive production tests to make them consistent.

I doubt there is a market for 100 units. A few dozen, probably.

Bar sizes should be appropriate to accept OE teflon-lined bushings, NOT POLY. Which means 30-32mm front with 22mm ends, and probably max 20mm rear? Given the tendency to understeer, a 30mm front bar (like the E60) would make sense along with a 20mm rear. If you are stuck using SAE sizes, that's a problem. 1-1/8" is 28.6mm (too small), 1-1/4" is 31.8mm (too big). No 20mm equivalent either (in between 0.75" and 0.875").

My gripe with the Feind bar is mostly that it lacked the flat area for locating the SLS bracket. I know, everyone says this is a non-issue, but locating the bracket and dialing in SLS is a RPITA without that flat area. Also, the Feind bar was supplied with poly bushings, which was a turn-off to me (yes I know a grease fitting was available, yes I know most people can't hear any noise, but it's there...)

Looks like maybe a dozen or two orders? If your supplier wants min 100 units at $300+, I'd find a new supplier. Sounds like they don't want the work.

I'm sure Jono would take some orders for parts stock (and Leistung as well?), if he doens't have any Fiend bars left. My fiend bar is sitting in my basement, never installed. I do have a Fiend on my C126, works well.

Agree with @gsxr though -- limited market, though including the 400E would increase it by probably 100% over just 500E owners. I'd say your max production run would be somewhere around 50 bars, and that's if Matt and Jono want to take on some stock.

I've got plenty of our Thick 036 bars on the shelf. Fat rears and Fat fronts. Brackets, bushings and links to all go with...everything you need.

Have 126 rears and R107 fronts and rears w/ full compliiments of poly bushings and brackets... Also have front 126 poly bushings, inner and outer..never did bother to have a front bar made given what swapping them requires!

Lemme know what y'all need... I've installed 5 sets of front and rear bars b/w clients and my Brumos 036.. Positive feed back on all counts..!

I did Not make 100 bars so my pricing is higher, but I wasn't going to park that many...but per the above, 100% made in USA with USA materials...
