410Mhz or 510Mhz Horn?

So I was perusing MBOEMparts.com and came across 2 horns in electrical:

003-542-27-20 510MHz
003-542-28-20 410MHz

I'm sure one is USA and the other is ROW. Which one is which? Am I right to assume the lower MHz is USA? Might be an interesting mod.

All 124's use two horns of different frequencies. Those part numbers are for early 124 chassis.

The E500E uses 004-542-15-20 (400Hz) and 004-542-16-20 (500Hz).

For a louder, more authoritative "honk" you can upgrade to the W210 / W220 horns:

006 542 78 20 High Tone (510 Hz)
006 542 90 20 Low Tone (420 Hz)

Much cheaper to go OEM Bosch than Genuine MB for these.

Many of us 126 owners also have a factory-option, switchable horn tone -- city and autobahn horn tones. It's a swtich on the center console.

Someone's YouTube video on this:

I don't really know, but why not both?
I always thought they were two of the same and not two discrete.

I believe that anytime there are two horns on a car, (any car, any year, with little exception), that you will find that the two horns will produce two different tones.

I see in gsxr's post above that the two E500E horns are 400Hz and 500Hz. These two tones played together are called a "dyad" chord, (musical chord with 2 notes), and they are the beginnings of a standard major 4 note chord.

The 400Hz is the bass note, and the 500Hz is the 3rd harmonic above it.

If you had two more horns, with 600Hz as the 5th harmonic and 800Hz as the octave above the bass, you would be playing a full 4 tone major chord.

If anyone is interested, you can put the link below on several tabs in windows, and then play as many tones together as you wish.

Start by adjusting tab one to 400Hz, then adjust to 500Hz on the second tab, play them together and separately to hear the differences.

Add two more tabs with 600Hz and 800Hz for chits and giggles, and when playing all 4 together it's easy to hear this harmonically balanced standard major chord.

Anyway, these two E500E horns are 1 & 3, of a 1-3-5-1 harmonic major chord... Just Musical trivia...

my car has 1 horn only, its infront of the dual fans, and i see lot of cars online with only one horn, maybe the other one in a different location?

According to EPC in the description notes it shows a different Hz for these two parts.

The 006-542-78-20 is 485 Hz Not 510 Hz
The 006-542-90-20 is 400 Hz Not 420 Hz

Since they are not the same. Which one of the two is by the fans and which one is near the passenger side fog light?
I don't know which one goes in which location, the EPC does not specify. I think they look the same and it shouldn't matter as long as you have 1 of each tone.

The original part numbers (A0045421520 & A0045421620) were replaced by the numbers above, and one of those has been superceded again. The new / superceded horns may look different than the originals - I think they are plastic instead of metal? You should be able to find good used ones from a 400E to remain period correct.

If you buy the new part numbers, the aftermarket Bosch are available for $20/ea from Pelican, while OE are $95-$115 each MSRP.

Very helpful!! The only issue I see with aftermarket Bosch is they are lower quality made in China while the ones from dealer are made in Germany or somewhere in Europe.

The dealer parts MAY be made in Europe... but may not be. If you do buy new ones, I'm curious what the COO is. I've seen more than one OE/Genuine part made in China these days.
