500E Problems with Starting

Hey Everyone, I have recently purchased a 500E 91 model which came from Japan. It had a slight misfire on it and after a bit of testing, I found out one injector wasn't working at all. So I replaced it with a new injector from my parts shop. I fitted everything back together and then the car would turn over once then not start. It wasn't even cranking.

So I figured out it must be something electrical. Nothing other than fuel rail and a few injectors were removed along with the injector wiring and ground. I started testing with a wire tester and there is power going to each wire plug for each of the 8 injectors and also the 2 units highlighted in the image I posted. She isn't even cranking.

Everything before was working perfect except for the misfire.

I have posted a pic of her as well.

Thanks in advance

The round things on the front are the camshaft solenoids/magnets, for the intake cam advance mechanism.

The cam solenoids and injectors are all controlled by the LH fuel injection module, located in the CAN box behind the passenger side strut mount. Check the fuses on the BM/GM module in the CAN box near the LH module.

The starter has no connection to engine control computers. Make sure the shift lever is in P or N when you try to start the engine. And verify all battery terminals are tight, noting there are TWO nuts on the positive terminal that BOTH must be tight.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Thank you very much, will get on to that now. Battery is new and power is there. Lights work, fan works etc but the engine is just not cranking at all. Car is in park. I am going to check on the LH module and the BM / GM module fuses. Thanks a lot for your input.

Welcome to the forum. Just a thought — Have you tried moving the gear shift lever out of P to D and back a few times? If your Neutral Safety Switch is going bad or out of adjustment it could inhibit operation of the starter. I once had a {going} bad NSS and I discovered that exercising the shift lever a few times allowed the starter to work. You will have to turn the key enough to get the shift lever out of P. Just to verify, when you turn the key to start it you don‘t hear anything? Not even the starter solenoid clicking? Could an aftermarket alarm be locking the starter out?

Thanks for this input. Everything was perfect until I removed the fuel rail, a few injectors. Fitted everything back and then it would click once (hear inside the car) and then not crank. Nothing else was changed.

Never an issue starting before changing the injector (new Mercedes unit) and then it won't crank. Dash works. I will check windows etc when battery is plugged in but it is not cranking.

I have removed the shifter several times to check if the gear shifter wasn't correctly in position (as the shifter and gear indicator poitions are not aligned) but that didn't change anything.

I am super confused what it could be. Even if vacuum lines are not connected properly or at all, it should still crank right?

Thanks

Yes, it should crank. At this point you may need to apply +12v to the starter solenoid terminal to "force" the starter on, to confirm the starter is working. If so, then trace backwards to find out why the ignition switch is not engaging the starter.

Apply +12v to the male center pin of the 3-pin connector shown below to manually engage the starter.

Thank you so much Buddy. Will check this out tomorrow. I am going to try and attach a video. It seems the clicking is from the starter solenoid? But is not engaging the starter. Then again what confuses me is everything was so perfect apart from one injector not working prior to this troubleshooting. My other car is a 190e with a c32 AMG supercharged engine and that was less mind boggling building that than diagnosing this.
