500Eboard Forum Software Conversion to XenForo

Fascinating. I don’t follow this mkt but I am curious - why did vbulletin cede all this market share to xenforo?
Yeah - given the slope of that curve, veeBooletin will be gone by the end of the decade. Or at least irrelevant.

:wormhole:

You should Google the saga of how Internet Brands bought Jelsoft (the developer of vBulletin) and promptly destroyed it.

The developers at Jelsoft left and founded XenForo around 2008 or 2009. When they released XenForo 1.0 in 2010, Internet Brands sued XenForo. It was later dismissed with a private settlement.

Then XenForo promptly started eating vBulletin’s lunch.

@xfadmin first bought a XenForo license in 2014 and played around with it for 5 years, until the software and its ecosystem matured to the point where it made sense to switch over. And several practice migrations were made.

Until @xfadmin on a whim just randomly decided four years ago to do the migration once and for all.

The rest is history. :jono:

I've seen this movie play out soooooooooo many times in real life with my own employers / company sales / investments ... 🤦
I find it is pretty rare that a company gets purchased and thrives under new ownership. In fact I can think of only one company that has a nearly 100% batting average at buying smaller companies and then fostering an environment under which the acquireee thrives. 🎉

March 10th was the 7th anniversary of the official "switchover" of this forum from vBulletin 4.2 to XenForo 2.1.

Best decision we ever made to migrate to this forum software. It's really been nice being on this software.

Somewhat of a steep learning curve over the first year or two, particularly in the realm of running the forum in a true virtual machine (where we control all aspects of the software and infrastructure), as opposed to the "managed" hosting that we used for the earlier vBulletin and phpBB forum software.

One thing is for sure -- no managed hosting setup would allow any forum to use ~180GB of image and document storage !!!
