I just want to get an idea of how other gear sounds in another E500/500E....particularly infinite baffle subs.

infinite baffle where...?

all audio installers i've talked to have advised against hanging 8"/10" subs off the rear deck...plus you have to hack up the sheet metal to do so....

try the spare tire well or glassed up shells in the quarters...i'm thinking of the former myself...

Spare tire well is a nice place to put all the amps & stuff. A sub in the spare tire well doesn't transfer very well to the passenger compartment. From an audio standpoint, the rear deck makes the most sense as the subs will fire directly into the passenger compartment - but this is also the most work to do properly, and requires chopping up the car quite a bit. Sticking a box in the trunk is the easiest route if you don't mind losing some of your cargo capacity.

Click here for pics of a nice rear deck setup from Finland; pic of end result is below - single 10" Alumapro, but not infinite baffle.

How about an active subwoofer under/inside one/more seats?

I had a 300 where we cut the center part of the sheet metal to allow air through to trunk. It gave a big enhancement. 2 rockfords for the 2 vega subs, and a huge box in the trunk. Not a pretty sight, but massive, deep and very smooth sound. Excellent for drum'n base/ r&b and other slow base-music. Base was adjusted to reflect against the trunk door, and back in through sheet metal opening for more precision.

It is a bad solution though to cut holes in the car structure, if you are concerned with safety.

How about an active subwoofer under/inside one/more seats?

I had considered removing the centre storage compartment between the rear seats and trying something like the Bazooka 6" x 18" active tube, it would fit snuggly between the seats, no holes to cut, totally reversible in 10 minutes, and although not ideal placement it would still work OK for rock n roll IMO:

Well- I bit the bullet. My Jehnerts just arrived from jehnert.de

I am going to give them a go without a subwoofer- if that still does not do the trick- I will add more until it all works. As it is now... it seems like not bad concerning performance.

I swap one HU deck for another... (I have a remote pre-amp that weighs about 8 lBS.)

I lose my door pocket and 6.5 woofer and gain a band new door pocket- matched even with the lower entry light....(I might consider a brighter bulb....or LED for that) and gain one more 6.5 inch woofer per panel for 2 woofers.

I add the weight of two tweeters...too as we didn't have a tweeter with stock.

so 2 tweeters, one mid, and about likely 12 lbs difference before about 12lbs per door =24lbs for doors for Dynamat.

So about 36lbs before an amp... that's less than a single sealed 10 inch sub! And the system is already pre- tuned from the factory for our w124's

No custom fabrication at this point needed... and my door panels were likely going to peel at some time anyhow as my original ones from my 1994 E500 pealed in 1999. So I figure I'm lucky the replacements I put on then have not peeled yet.

Cost was completely reasonable from Don A. Of NJ ordered on Monday morning - arrived drop shipped to my door on Friday afternoon.

I must say- the panels look really nice.

Those Jehnerts are nice looking and a few board members describe the sound as very good, especially for a bolt on solution. One day when I have the funds I will order a set. Currently I have a single 10" with 250w in the trunk but I have tested dual 10's with 600w also. As other members have said the bass is heavily attenuated unless a port is used into the cabin from the trunk. I am also against hacking up my rear deck just for more bass. I'm not 18 years old anymore and I don't need brain hemorrhaging bass to be happy. Those quad 6.5" will push hard when paired with clean high power. Add a single 10" in the trunk if you need a bit more below 60-80hz.

IMO the extra weight added is moot with a car that's already approaching 4,000lbs.

Contrary to what has been posted, the passenger compartment is not sealed from the trunk and thus, just about anything you have mounted inside the trunk will be heard/felt inside the the passenger area.

Case in point. I use a Infinity Basslink T, which at its deepest point is 7" and it has a single 10" sub and two 10" passive radiators. RMS power is 250watts. The remote volume control (depending upon the genre of music) is set at about 1/4 of its maximum (in my car), so that translates into ALOT of bass inside the cabin.

Sadly, the Infinity Basslink T is discontinued and I couldn't even find a used one on eBay. Got any recommendations for a similar unit that's currently available...?

:apl:

Infinty does make a similar solution but without the passive radiators. It's about $300. JL Audio also makes a 10" and 12" sub enclosure with an amplifier already attached. I've considered trying out a shallow frame woofer and constructing a box that mimics the Infinity's dimensions. Another idea that won't take too much trunk space is having a fiberglass box made to fit the drivers side well area. A local shop has quoted me around $250 to build it. Not a bad price if you factor in materials, labor, and overall mess created by stinky resin everywhere.

Yeah, I liked the compact (thin) dimensions on the Basslink-T. The others are a bit different, and I'd likely want two of 'em to get decent bass. Guess I'll keep looking...

I’ve never had much love for the subwoofer. My original thoughts on them & my introduction to it regarding the 500E are described here under Part3:

http://500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?990-My-first-test-drive-ever-in-a-500E&daysprune=-1

Nevertheless, I inherited a dead 10” MB Quart Discus DSE213 in a Bassworx enclosure residing in the trunk. I decided to maintain the subwoofer concept when I happened upon a good deal on the next generation of this model (DWG254). Also, the previous owner had the rear deck ported (poorly) so the whole trunk acted as a secondary enclosure. A hole was carved…no, hacked thru the flat portion of the deck that the rear left passenger seat headrest lies upon. The port trim ring looked like it was involved on the losing-side of a knife fight. This porting was the only metallic mutilation of an otherwise near pristine 500E. The perpetrator of this job-quality performance is deserving of a summary execution on-site. Thankfully, I got my hands on the car before any other "ingenius" concepts could be performed.

Although an acceptable concept, I never would have done what the PO had done, but I decided to make the best of the existing situation.

  • I deburred & cleaned up the edges of the port hole.
  • I replaced the trim ring with a new ring.
  • I replaced the subwoofer & bedded it down in its enclosure with acoustic clay & new mounting fasteners.
  • I installed a grille over the subwoofer for protection.
  • I installed Crutchfield corner protectors on the enclosure & a surplus heavy duty grab handle.
  • I cemented & screwed Velcro to the corner protectors to keep the enclosure stationary within the confines of the trunk

The enclosure resides on the driver’s side. I usually remove it when traveling with luggage. The setup works fine. It does not interfere with access to the spare tire or anything else in the trunk. The Alpine head unit provides a separate subwoofer control feature. The trunk panel-mounted MB Quart amp provides a remote control which performs the same function (I have not installed this remote control).

The sound system is further described here under Thread #6:

If I were starting from scratch on a subwoofer installation, I believe I would go for an excellent 8” or possibly another 10” unit (a mini-version of 2phast’s Infinity unit would be nice) within a custom enclosure placed within the confines of the driver-side fender well.P9210023.JPGP9210028.JPGP9210030.JPGP9210029.JPGP9210027.JPGP9210026.JPG
