Not to gloat BUT......... I just happened to buy a real, genuine AMG 500E muffler out of Japan.

I have been assured, and convinced myself though literally hours and hours of research, phone calls to Gillet, phone calls to welding companies, etc., etc. that it is the real thing.
I paid more for it than my first car, in fact the shipping alone cost more than my first car. But, I ask, what does money matter when your IQ is hovering around your shoe size?
I can do no better than to quote the long suffering Joanna when she sighed, "I just can't wait to see what 'valuable' piece of crap arrives this time."
Besides; considering its origins, I suspect that this will make my car get nuclear, and we all know how easy it is to score when you have something that's hard and glows in the dark !!!

Pics to follow when/if:
1) It actually arrives.
2) The shipping company doesn't lose it.
3) Pirates do not take over the ship and it ends up somewhere in Somolia.
4) The trucking company doesn't lose it.
5) Homeland Security doesn't put a Gieger counter anywhere near it.
6) Joanna doesn't hit me over the head with it.

Kind Regards,

Ron

I think #6 is the most likely. Can't wait to see the photos!!! High-res, please, so I can mirror them on my site... :D

Ron, any chance disclosing the source in japan? Is it AMG japan? Would like to change rear muffler also at some point - will this fit in replacement of the standard stock muffler or does a complete AMG unit need to be fitted? The mid resonator/muffler on mine has been removed by previous owner, instead a Y pipe from the cats is installed.

Thanks

Hello Bing:

I got it from a private individual.

It is a direct fit, bolts to the standard resonator using all MB parts. I have a factory muffler which has around 2K miles on it. When I get my new toy I'll weigh the two and see if there's any difference. Should tell us if any internals have been removed.

Kind Regards,

Ron

For some reason, the Japanese don't seem to warm about using Ebay. They prefer Yahoo Auctions.

You can find these mufflers on Yahoo Auctions plus many other rare and hard to find items. If your looking for a deal though, Japan is not the place to find one, rare items yes, deals no. Also, good luck in finding sellers willing to ship to USA. They exist, just hard to find.

And in Poland they like Allegro.pl in lieu of eBay.
Interesting AMG/Lorinser/Brabus stuff is found in the middle of nowhere for some reason. I even found a nice complete 124 Lorinser body kit in some 2 whore town last October.
When I was there last year I saw a few Bentley Continentals and the new Ferrari dealership in Warsaw is in the former HQ of the Communist Party, fitting justice of sorts IMHO. The guy who has it is the same guy who has the license to import M-B's, Zasada, an old Porsche racer.

My experiance is that a lot of AMG stuff in Japan is is either used up to within an inch of it's life or just plain fake. The occaisional gem does turn up every now and then but "buyer beware" is the coin of the realm.

One way to tell real 500E mufflers from the "put together in the back teahouse" items is by the welds.
The real ones were not hand welded, and it shows. Best welds I have ever seen anywhere.

Kind Regards

Ron

Second that. Ron you are one funny cat. After having the 500E driving experience, coming in a close second is the pleasure of logging onto the Espot, perusing through the boards and voila, refreshing to see a level of intellect and humour that makes my day. Unlike the mind-knumbing rice-burner and domestic sites that exist in cyberspace these days.
